Well, it was television (or movies) so they just carted it around with a hand truck that you'd think twice about before moving any of your machines with it, so they just "acted" like it was real heavy.  They had mad acting skillz ::)

Did you totally miss this part:

Reminds me of some show I saw (mebbe a movie?) where the thieves stole an ATM machine and took it home to open it up and take all the money out

It was seen on a television set, and was clearly an attempt at comedy, since I've never in my life seen an ATM that looked like it could be stolen....unless you have the tools handy to remove the mortar and bricks they usually surround them with.

I never said I thought it was true, just that your story reminded me of that show

Actually there's a lot of atm's around here in strip clubs churches and variety stores that could be stolen.
Back for nostalgia, based on nostalgia.

Was the movie "Friday", or one of it's sequals?  I could swear they did that in one of those movies...  :-\
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

It's funny. I spend a lot of time designing the surrounds that ID each ATM to a specific bank. I usually coordinate with the building engineer and the ATM team that installs the machines and have found that a lot of ATMs (particularly kiosk style machines, like you'd see in a supermarkets) would be surprisingly easy for a couple of guys to pick up and throw into a van.  At first I couldn't believe it and actually called the ATM manufacturers; they said that to make installation easier the standard machines can't be bolted down and don't weigh as much as you'd think.

That sounds right, cuz Ice Cube was sticking in my head, but he wasn't the guy who's stealing it....they take it back to the guy's grandparent's house, since "they got all sorts of tools"

Mebbe Friday after Next was what it's from?

I'll take your word for it, cuz they all kinda blended in together....I haven't seen that movie since it first came out.  Is "somewhat memorable" reason enough to see a movie a second time? :D

It may have, but this ATM looked like a newspaper vending box on steroids, and around me, all of the ATM's are set into the actual bank, into a separate brinck building near the bank, or something similar.  They DO have these slim (not more than 2 feet wide) little money dispensers in gas stations, but these are fairly new to these parts....I know I saw the movie before these started popping up.

I think we will be needing a build your own pickup truck and chain attachment first for easy transport.

I've GOT a pickup truck and a chain.  I'd be afraid I'd tear my hitch all to pieces....or at least damage something on my truck!

I find so many knuckleheads off the side of the road when it snows AND rains, I just started KEEPING the chain in my truck.

Once at a supermarket near me, some thieves stole a JCB in the middle of the night and the used the shovel as a ram and competely 'dug' the ATM out of the wall and drove off with it!  :o
