Why is Vantage runnin' so slow?
« on: May 07, 2005, 11:55:41 am »
I decided to tinker with Vantage as I have seen it referenced many times for runnin classics.

There must be a short between my chair and the keyboard somewhere as I understood by design it is able to produce grate framerate on older hardware but it is running like a snail (37fps) on an AMD2200.

Granted, I'm runnin it from command prompt in a win2k environment but not inside a window or anything.

I can't get the sound to work either and it vantage appears to overwrite the .cfg file each time it starts so the setting I place there does not seem to be sustained from run to run.

I'm sure its something stupid from a lack of coffee this morning,,,,anyone help me with a clue?

Thanks.

command line and dos are not the samething.
vantage is for dos
try joymonkeys boot floppy.
you will see what I mean.
I am new to this also. I still need to find out my dos driver for my PC also.
joymonkey has offered his help but I am trying to do it on my own first. not ready to toss in the towel yet  ;D

Understood on being for DOS, was just starting under windows to get a feel for how well it ran. Would have expected it to work a bit better even in this mode seeing as sound option 6 recites "windows sound system".

I'll keep tinkering like the rest of you. I'm with Peale tho....it doesn't seem to honor its own .cfg file and recreates it each time it runs.

Anyone figure that one out?

I would like to point out that not only is the command line not the same as dos, but in the case of 2k/xp the command line isn't even a true command line!

Xp and 2k don't have dos, they have a dos emulator.  Any true dos app ran in them will:

A.  Not run
B.  Run with severe errors
C.  Run slower than the same app would run on a 486.

Long story short.... if you want to run vantage, get a pos machine and install dos on it.

It's silly to run vantage on a amd 2200 btw.... that'll run everything in mame just fine in xp.... no need to lower yourself to using dos, 9x, ect.

Vantage isn't a "want to use it" type of emulator, it's a "have to use it" one.  Mame is better in every single respect, it just happens to be slighty faster.  I guess it would be good to run pacman on a p66, but that's about it.

Not me, not yet.  And it doesn't save the key configuration there, just the other options.  If you want it to stay, set the file as 'read-only' after setting the options you want.
