my cabaret project

after building several cabs for other people i figured it's time i should build one for myself.

i picked up this cabaret gyruss conversion on ebay a couple months back and have finally started refurbing the cabinet.

as you can see this cab has seen better days. the lower area has quite a bit of water damage and the top and bottom pieces need to be replaced. not for the weak of heart. i really like this cabs shape and it is just big enough to hold a 19" monitor. i think it deserves another chance at life.

at this point i've dissasembled the cab and have removed some of the bad wood.

next up is to remove some of the lower area that has water damage. once that is done i'll build a new bottom for the cab, then move up and replace the top piece.

i was able to make some more progress.

new back and top installed

tonight i was able to have a little fun and do something besides replace rotted wood. this is the cd rom/floopy mount. it sits behind the lower coin door.

i know it looks a little crooked in the top pic. it's not my mount but the door. it's hinge is a little bent which causes the door to lean a little. i'll take care of that when i refurb the whole assembly.

i'll also probably build another, taller, coin box. i think the coins/tokens will just bounce out of the current one.

This project reminds me of the kids story of the stone soup, where this guy claims he can make soup out of a stone, then adds a bit of salt, then onions etc. you get the picture, untill finally he remove the stone and voila - soup.  What I mean is that oneday you will will end up replacing the last bit of the original and have a completely scratch built cab.

heh heh , the thought of replacing the sides and front has crossed my mind. since what's left of the original shell is in decent shape i doubt that will happen. you never know.....
