I'm not sure what you mean by the contacts. I take it you have tried adjusting the contrast slider?

Yep, set it all the way right and I can see that the squares are filling in dark, but not black.  The contacts I mean are the rubber sides, but it seems that I've got good contact because I can see the letters, they're just extremely light to the point that I can hardly see them.

Sounds like you need he polorizing film then. I guess I got lucky with mine  :-[
