Well I finially started.. How about some pictures...
« on: May 03, 2005, 03:47:35 pm »
Well here it is.. My first cabinet. I have been planning it for a while and now that I have time, started it. I first started off with a control panel. Two 8-ways and one 4-way. And a trackball. I do have a nice LCD screen that will display directions to each game in MAME and then generic directions to the emulated games.

I plan to have swappable control panels. My second panel will be a 'You Dont Know Jack' panel where I have three large pushbuttons, four answer buttons, a flexible usb keyboard for the answers you have to type.

Anywhozle, I know people have made cabinets without an inner frame, but for now that is what I did. Shell panels coming soon! Oh and thats a 27" tv.

I REALLY like the design of your cab plans.  Very RETRO arcade.  CP ties in VERY nicely!  Please get it done quickly so I can see the final product.

Thanks! I appreciate it. I will probably make it pacman yellow with black edges. I am frankly tired of black cab's. Add some color. Also, I know I wanted a simple control panel but didnt want the control panel to stick out from the cabinet.

More pictures coming soon.

Question though... I am puzzled on the area where the monitor plexi meets the control panel. Do I have it go down to the bottom of the tv support ot to the cp. hmmmm I will take closer pics for your opinion.

Go down to the TV shelf. IMHO it looks much neater that way.

Here are my options...

Option 1 - Going to the control panel. This may or may not leave some space up to the tv. Need to work on my bezel for that.

Option 2 - Plexi up against tv, Has awkward space behind control panel. Small babies could get trapped in there.

Ah ok. Option 1 then. I thought you were talking about having the bottom of the glass resting on the top of the CP.

As for the Pacman yellow.... If I did that to mine that would push the WAF way below acceptable levels :D

I did your Option 1, but I beveled the back edge of the CP slightly to make it flush and press the bezel into the frame.
It wasn't as precise as it sounds. I just measured and cut the MDF for the panel, then eyeballed it, marked it with a pencil, cut it down to roughly right with a jigsaw, then sanded it to a perfect fit.

Definitely option 1.  Like TOK suggested, bevel the edge of the CP to make it flush against the glass.

Gotta go option 1.  Where else are you gonna stack quarters?  I suppose the marquee...

Well... At lunch today I thought about getting some cardboard to test out some measurements on the side and back panels. However, no luck finding any. So... I went to home depot... For 6 bucks a sheet, I found 1/2 inch insulation panels.. very light weight but yet sturdy... Since I have my internal frame built, I will attach these to the sides and back to see if my design is logical once created.

WOO HOO..

We shall see tonight... I will post pics once done.

On a side note... I did spend yesterday trying to configure MameWah... I love the new version, however the old one was much easier to customize and configure.

Well here it is... I finially got the balls to see what my design looks like when together.

I used three 4'x8'x1/2 inch insulation panels from home depot (6.99 each) and some 'Button Tap' fastners.

Marked all the cuts on the panels and used an exacto knife to cut... What could be easier...

After following my plans, most pieces came together nicely. The only thing right now is the bottom angle that goes down. I made the sides too short so it sticks out some. But other than that.. Not bad. I may bring my tv angle up too. Just depends once I get my bezel.

Here is a pic. It looks like the redneck version made of foil but I am sure glad I did it. With this being my first cabinet, it was nice to have a dry run through it.

Not sure what you consider giant... The marguee is only 7-8"

I may make it smaller.. Not sure yet...

Any suggestions?

Well after lots of planning and waiting.... I finially replaced my temporary design with actual wood...

I went with the sanded birch plywood... Lighter than MDF and sanded so I dont have to spend hours sanding regular plywood.

So far it is pretty sturdy. I am cutting the rest of the panels tonight and putting it together. Its hard when its over 100 out. ugh

But its a DRY heat!  :)

Looks good so far!  What'd you do with the mock-up?  I say spray it black and sell it to some kid down the street. :)

Nice idea with the kid... Might have to try that. If not he can make a shiny space shuttle out of it. I can even poke holes in it for him.

Well I put the rest of the panels on... Not bad. Very sturdy and I am sure glad I got the 5" Wheels from Home Depot. Makes moving that thing around easy.

You will notice that my coin door is different. I got the "fake" coin door from happs for i think 25 or 29 bucks. Not bad. Good quality. I can even dremel out slots for the coins and still have it somewhat be functional.

I just took these clearer pictures. I just got done filling in some of the holes and such. Will sand those once they dry all the way. I also cut the bezel to the proper width, I will adjust the height once it comes time to put the tv back in it.

Let me know what you think... Oh and on a side note, if anyone needs a quick way to make a cabinet look good, I highly suggest the Happs bezel. Very good quality and easy to work it. And looks great!

Well, after a nice trip to Home Depot. I got some paint, and thought I would take the next step...

Will do the 2nd coat soon and then add the t-molding.

Here is a picture from tonight after adding the black inside paint and the yellow exterior paint.

Did you use a paintbrush or roller and what type of paint is that?

Thanks!

I used Glidden Semi-Gloss paint (sundrenched color) Cost 20 bucks.
It is over Kilz latex primer.

THe brush I used a foam roller. They have different kinds, I used the one that results in smooth finishes. This was the first time I ever used a foam roller. They rock! One dip in the pan and I can do a whole side! When it goes on, you will see little bubbles that makes it look rough. Wait 5 min and they all pop and leave a smooth surface. They even have foam corner brushes that work great!

For the black on the inside, I just used flat black so it would not reflect anything from the monitor.

Well, it is finially done! I rolled it into my apartment today. After holding my breath.. It fit through all the doorways and hallways :)

Here are some crappy cell phone pictures.

Whats left?
- Glue some of the t-molding down where its loose.
- Attach the speakers
- Put on the front plexi for the monitor
- And I need to re-do my cp. (Already have it cut, just need to move buttons)
- Add lights behind the coin reject button.

Great looking Cab! I like the way you stuck to one theme (except for a horizontal monitor ;) )
How are you planning on making the transition between the front and the top of the controlpanel?

I am going to have the cp hang over the front a bit. My old cp was not wide enough. I will stick some t-molding on the leading edge and go to town!

Glad you like it.

how does the happs 27" bezel look on the tv, I got a 13" one once and it doesnt fit the curves at all.  Did you have to de-case the tv?  You've got a very clean cab.  I wish I would have done something other than black  :)

It fits pretty good. It was more a fact of me getting the angle of the tv and the tv lined up itself.

The tv is still in its case. I wasnt about to fry myself.

Thanks! I got tired of black cabs. Now I am working on a "You Dont Know Jack" control panel.
