19" verti. monitor screen roll
« on: May 03, 2005, 09:41:01 am »
Hello all, I just started working on my mame cabinet. I have an old mat mania arcade game with a wells gardner 19 k4675 monitor installed vertically. So far i am able to get win xp rotated so i dont get a neck strain! and mamewah is still rotated so i have to tilt my head (horizontal) I cant figure out how to get mamewah rotated (one issue) buy my major concern now is i cannot get any vertical game to stop rolling, I mean i can but every time i lauch a game i gotta go adjust the pots to get it to stop rolling then i can play it, and then if i exit the game back to mamewah back to rolling screen and adjusting the pots again. I know this monitor is going to need a cap kit, will that fix all of the issues?
I have run the Avres program from ultimarcs web site.
I am using an arcadeVGA, winxp sp2, 1.3 ghz pc, ultimarcs monitor cable with power booster (cant remember actual name)
I have winxp res to 640x480, and mamewah at same. (i think thats where i left it last night dont remember exactly) anyways long post but anybody have any pointers for me?
Oh yea almost forgot i have both -h and-v sync hooked up together as composite and connected to the sync on andys video amp board, and grnd is hooked up to the black wire coming from the original monitor wiring harness.

Thanks, All!

hmmmm..well the capkit is a must (although it may or may not cure your current problem)  what resolutions are the games that roll being displayed at?  What utility did you use to select the resolutions for each of your games?  you can check the ini files and see what the arcadevga is selecting (unless its auto then i'm not sure how you find out)  with some games i had to switch resolutions on some games cause even though the avga thinks they should work, they weren't the best one.  You may also just have to find the "sweet spot" on your vertical hold and this can be very frustrating...

Yea i did use the arcadevgares utility from andy warnes website, so it went through and made .ini files for each game. on game i had opened up its ini file and it was set to if i remember right 244 x 328 something like that, something strange. i am only looking to run all vertical games on this monitor i wont even attempt running horiz. games on it. I thought running the avres utility would pick the right resolutions for ea. one, otherwise like you said very time consuming to set each one by hand and keep adjusting till i dont have to correct the pots for ea. one.

you could try out the mamewah arcadevga resolution tool--you can select a resolutiuon that works and apply it to all the games at one time--very slick.  make sure you read the help DOC that goes with it.

http://mamewah.mameworld.net/downloads.htm

make sure all your pots are adjusted so that your front end is stable then find a resolution that works at that setting--basically you want to adjust the vertical hold pot until its just about to roll but not quite.  i find this to be as close to without going over, the settings that fit well for vertical games (although you are on a vertical monitor so what i just said might be bunk) play with it awhile, you'll get a feel for it.

Yea thanks i didnt know there was another resoultion tool, this mamewah res tool looks very useful, i get the picture now. Everything is started to make a bit of sense (somewhat). Thanks for your help.
one other quick question, i am goign to order a cap kit from bob roberts site (is that the best place to order one?) i am not good at soldering nor do i trust myself with discharging and doing the work. What can i expect to pay to have an amusement vendor tech. do the work?

I would say bob roberts is the best bet but there are others who do supply the same kit--go with whatever feels comfortable.  As far as desoldering/soldering goes--see if you can get a scrap piece of electronics (preferably older non surface mounted parts) aand experiment, you'll need a de-solder wick/pump (again depending on personal preference) and a good pencil tip soldering iron.  I myself use a desoldering pump that has a heated tip so i'm not screwing around with plastic tips all the time--works great in my opinion but thats just me.  read the FAQ if you haven't already on discharging--its not that bad if you pay attention to what you are doing.

I'm sure ken could give you an estimate as far as service techs go since he is one--not cheap I know that much!

sounds like i may be better off investing in or borrowing a good soldering iron and desoldering pump. If i gotta pay someone a 100 bill or more to install the cap kit then it looks like im gonna learn real quick. I would imagine anybody who does it woudl at least charge for a minimum of an hour labor, which is probably going to be more than 50/hour? sound right?
thanks for all your insight. Very helpful indeed.
