usb ports not recognized HELP!!
« on: May 01, 2005, 02:44:30 pm »
i have my machine running windows xp home and every time i turn it on it does not recognize my ipac4,spinner, and trackball, the spinner and tb are oscars mouse hacks. all three of these are usb. if i take them out and put them back in the computer will recognize them and everything is ok until i turn it off and try to start it again. anyone have any experience with this problem?

they are connected directly to the computer. also, just to be a little clearer, if i restart the computer the ipac, spinner, and tb will still work. it is only when i turn off all the power to the cabinet/pc and turn it back on that does not recognize anything plugged into the usb ports.

anyone have an idea of whats wrong?

Sounds like it's a USB power issue: your computer doesn't have enough start up power to charge all your devices at boot up.

If that's the case, get a "self powered" USB hub (one that plugs into the wall) and put one or two devices on it.

Do you know how large your power supply is?

I get this if I hook up too much stuff to my keyboard (it has built in 2 port usb hub).  I only have the mouse plugged into that now.  But if I plug something that needs a bunch of power, like my flash drive or digital camera, every minute or so the keyboard will power down and reset itself.  It did that more often on my old computer which was only a 200watt PSU.  The new computer is a 450watt PSU and the keyboard only powers down if I have something that requires a bunch of power in both usb ports, not just one (like the headphones and flash drive).   Of course now all my USB ports are filled with something (not like when I first got my usb keyboard with the old computer).  So I am drawing a lot of power out of all the ports. (Printer, joystick, gamepad, keyboard/mouse, flash drive, digital camera cord, gps data cord, headphones...)

So if I wanted to use the ports on my keyboard I'd have to hang a powered usb hub off those ports first so whatever is connected gets enough power.
