Got my motorcycle license today.
« on: April 27, 2005, 10:38:16 am »
It didn't rain this time so I was able to take the motorcycle test. I sort of frustrated the examiner with my old school Honda Passport Scooter. "What do you mean it doesn't have a clutch".

Then frustrated her again for the last part of the test (skidding stop), I was supposed to be going 15 miles an hour after a period of 8 feet. Not even physically possible on a 70cc scooter geared for street use. I explained that before hand. Tried it, totally impossible, first gear on the bike only goes to 10 mph. Anyway, tried it anyway, shifted after 7 feet and was going like 8 miles per hour. Explained it again that it wasn't possible on a 70cc. She still had me try again, second time I did not shift into second, was going maybe 7 miles per hour when I crossed the first line (at which point I was supposed to be going 15), and was up to 12 (and over the red line) when I hit the second line to brake. I had like 50 feet of space to stop in, it took me like 3!  ;D She gave up and said I passed.

In your state you need a motorcycle license for a scooter?
In WI below 50cc I don't think you need a license.  50cc-125cc is considered a scooter, not sure if you need a license for it, I doubt it.

Anyways, cool!!

How is this a skidding stop?  :)

In my state under 50cc (the ever famous 49cc) is non-reg, over that requires a license, insurance, etc.

Mine will actually only be a 70cc 3speed this year, my winter project will involve a brand new 120cc 4speed Honda clone motor (and beefier tires going to switch from 2.25 in front and 2.50 in back to 2.50 in front and 2.75 in back). It will be wicked fast for a teeny tiny little bike. I'll still have to keep it off the highway (for the sheer reason that it is too LIGHT), but it will be more than capable of highway speeds with the new engine. I'll have to modify the exhaust, throttle cable, and rework some of the wiring, but the engine bolts up and fits the bike.

I think it is called the skidding stop because you are allowed to skid. The whole test is a joke anyway, none of it is truly even applicable to a bike like mine. I have ridden big bikes, it is completely different, only thing they have in common with my bike is 2 wheels and they have some of the same controls.

Paigeoliver,

That's funny that you are going to be putting a bigger engine your your c70 (I'm guessing you're going with either the Lifan or the Zongshen, I hear the Lifan are the better of the 2 honda knock-offs).

I actually just bought a bigger engine for my 1981 C70 (it's an actual honda engine from the CT bike, it's 110cc, should be a fairly easy swap).  It's still being shipped to me, I can't wait to get it and slap it on.

On one of the Yahoo groups, someone there put a 100cc Lifan engine on their bike and had it up to 50MPH no problem (and that was without pushing it all the way since the engine wasn't broken in yet).  I'm not looking to drive mine on the freeway or anything either, just trying to keep up with traffic a little better (the road from my house to downtown is 45, just out of reach of my current 70cc's, as I top out at 35-40mph).

My wife is really excited about this bike too, she actually went and got the motorcycle hand book from the DMV yesterday, and she wants to get her motorcycle license so she can use this to run errands around town.  These are great bikes, good luck with your upgrade, you'll have to tell me how it goes.

yeah, completely different.  Scooters have that extremely low center of gravity, changes everything.

Talking motorcycles... going to the other end of the spectrum I will be test driving a new Triumph Rocket III this weekend to get a tshirt :)

Well, a Honda 919 scared the "carp" out of me ;)
I didn't realize I had that to 110mph at the bottom of the on ramp

Let me know how that is. I know a guy who took one for a ride and it scared the carp out of him. He is an old guy though....

Does everyone have carp in them to be scared out?  Are they like an appendix?

I'd think if the guy wasn't scared, that'd be a little fishy too ;D

I was mainly looking at the 120cc Lifan engine or the Lifan 107cc. The 107 might be better since it is also an autoclutch (like my bike is now), and I wouldn't have to add a clutch to the bike.

Just from what I've read, I think that Lifan 107 would be easier to install and a better fit for the bike (honestly, I'm a little worried about the braking ability if I get it up to past 50mph).

I guess you mentioned that you were going to redo your tires and brakes, so probably not as big a concern for you, but something to think about.
