What frontend do I need to use?
« on: November 22, 2002, 12:13:47 pm »
All this time and I haven't bothered with a frontend yet.

Ok, I have a PIII 733 with 640 megs of ram. I'm running Windows ME (i know, I know) Its currently my only computer so I just move it over to my cocktail cabinet when I want to have "games night"

I need a windows front end... I want to conserve computing power, and I want the run multiple emulators in case I want to add them in the future.

My buddy who has a PII 350 (who I just built a table top controller for) needs a frontend as well so I'd like to be able to set up the same one for him.

Any thoughts? I need to know whats best for my needs and current setup.

Oh, while I'm at it.... What about Mame versions? I'm currently using .61 command line Mame. Would another version be better to use? Mame32?

for a p350 advancemenu, gamelauncher and arcadeos are probaably your best bet because they need the least amount of resources.

from that bunch advance menu is my fav but around here gamelauncher is still the most fav of that bunch...

Gamelauncher works in windows? I know it does multiple emulators which is good.

Is there a better choice for my system then? (the 733) I'd be willing to set up a separate one for me, I just thought it would be easier to set up two the same for now.

Edit: Ok, I've looked it up ad I'm leaning towards GL. It mentions it works in Windows. Good. It mentions it works with a command line emulator. Good again, I'm using windows command line Mame. Is that the best setup considering my computer? Should I be using Mame32? Or doesn't it really matter?

I seem to be working fine with command line Mame and it looks like Game Launcher would work just fine. Am I missing some pitfalls?

if your not using mam32 itself by all means stay with the commandline version. mame32 is just the commandline version with a gui added.
there are a lot of other fe's that will work great with your p733. i like lazarus. and if you want  an easy to setup fe  emuwizzard and mamewah are good candidates... so just fool around with some and have fun :-)

Another interesting FE is Emuloader:  http://www.mameworld.net/emuloader/

Lots of options, use icons, lists etc.  I use it on my upright MAME cab, but not on my Pole Position cab and I won't use it in the cocktail I'm building since those two need to squeeze as much out of the CPU as possible (PII 233s) - which is why they are dos(and Emu Loader doesn't do DOS).

I'm downloading a few frontends now to test each one.

Gamelauncher is your best bet.  I sware by it for any of my arcade projects. Works very very well under Windows/DOS/Linux
