Daphne - Dragon's Lair II - CVS Builds
« on: April 19, 2005, 05:13:26 pm »
Hey guys!  I'm using a CVS build of Daphne..  because currently the real release does not support Dragon's Lair II.

My problem is that..  about 25 seconds or so into a game, Dragon's Lair II reboots my computer!  IT appears to be at random times... give or take 5 seconds.

Dragon's Lair 1 and Space Ace both play fine (ripped straight from the DVDs myself)

Lair 2.. I acquired through the newsgroups to try.

Any ideas?  Maybe my CVS build is outdated?  (not sure which version I'm using, I'll check when I get home)  Are there any places to find compiled CVS builds of Daphne?

Maybe it's a codec issue?

thanks guys.

uh oh!  It doesn't look good!

The odd thing is though.. is that it plays fine on my other comp and my comp at work (shhh, don't tell my boss)

I just compared it to my other computer.  And it actually looks fine.. except that it clearly just ends (system reboot)..  rather than shutting down.

The only difference is that there is a joystick detected on the logfile that I've shown you and no joy detected on my other comp.  Same video card.  Same drivers.

I wonder if it could be the virtual joystick that I'm using.. that would be odd.

Funny thing...  I was searching 'nohwaccel' for some insight into your problem and came across your thread over at the Daphne forums!  ;D

I get a 'no joystick detected' message when I check the log.  I 'm using an i-pac so it remaps the control keys before starting the game.  I'm sure the next thing you'll be doing is trying it with the keyboard only.

Yes, I posted over in the Daphne forums...  and, understandbly, they can't offer much in the way of support as their policy states that they can't support CVS builds.

Lots of experience to draw from in these forums though!

I'm going to try to uninstall the virtual joystick in a moment.. I'll see where that leads.

Thanks!

This sounds like an issue nothing to do with daphne. I suspect its a sound/gfx driver issue.

Are you using the latest gfx drivers available?

As a test, try going to display properties and moving the hardware acceleration tab down to nil, then try daphne, then up one notch, try daphne... and see if there is a point where it starts crashing.

Just a question for those who got DL2 working, does it have the "beep" sounds and the graphic overlays.  The one I'm using doesn't seem to be 100% working properly...

Thanks...

Amazing how all the laserdisc roms can be freely distributed without anyone saying a word, yet all other roms are somehow different?

Hmmmm. Amazing how that works, eh?

It's actually not that amazing. I believe the Laser disc games are different for 2 reasons:
1) The "real" game content is in the VIDEO not the ROM.
2) The copyright owner expressed their consent in allowing the use of Daphne

You can download 3 MAME ROMs (quick someone ban me!) here:
http://www.mame.net/downmisc.html

These 3 MAME ROMs are allowed because #2 happened for them as well. And of course you can buy ROMs from:

I wonder if you need to code the MPEG at a different resolution to get the overlays.  Cobra Command didn't work for me until I coded it at 512X480...

Jelwell,

Did you make that Daphne build yourself?  Any chance we might see a build with DL2 support and incorporating the latest feature from the new release "-nojoystick"

This would, essentially, complete life for me.

Yeah... run it in windowed mode.  Daphne stretches the image to the resoluton you choose, rather than scaling it, so if you ran it in fullscreen the aspect would be all screwed up anyway.

(BTW, I'm already assuming that you have the sense to know that any emulator other than mame doesn't support rotation and any rotation has to be done on the video card driver level.)

No that's not it... CVS builds are NOT up for support on the daphne forums. It says so right in the bi-laws.  It's a direct violation of their forum rules to ask about them.  Why?  It's a cvs build, things aren't going to work right, that's why it's not  the official build.  Also things that work on "computer A" aren't guaranteed to work on "computer B" yet.  It's like asking about a fix to a problem on a wip driver in mame.  It's wip driver, you aren't supposed to be using it anyway.

I'm being no more brutal than the daphne moderators, they just used much kinder language (just got back from there and saw the post, hehe).  As a matter of fact, if he wasn't kind about asking, they would have banned him, I've seen it happen before.  My words were a warning, but alas, nobody listens.

This kind of response (here and over there) is uncalled for. I understand that it is an unsupported build. But how hard is it to actually say that it is a known bug? Who develops the CVS builds and where can we chat about them? Isn't the goal to get every game working? They are not gods over there and people other than the developers can possibly fix some of the bugs. People need to be a little more open minded. I am by no means a noob, and I read FAQs where ever I go, and stick to the rules mostly. But sometimes I think we need more answers, especially with this game. They don't discuss anything about it. It's like top secret or something. I thought that perhaps the sound issue is something that could be maybe changed in a config file. Just trying to understand the program better.

Thanks for sticking up for me Dave!

You are missing the point.  They are the developers, it's their program and their forum, not yours.  So as far as you are concerned they ARE god.

CVS builds are for developer's only (but they release them to anyone who signs up just incase they wish to work on them and contribute.)

They aren't up for use, or discussion by the general public.  The developers test the cvs builds themselves and aren't interested in public opinon.  When it's an offical build, THEN the users are welcome to report bugs.

It's the same reason why I don't use beta testers for my fe anymore.  I would waste all my time getting "bug reports" on issues I was already aware of and just hadn't finished yet.  It's far quicker to go over the build myself (because I am familiar with the code and what is still left unfinished) then to spend all day writing up a sheet explaining to my testers all the known issues and what not to worry about.

In short, by asking cvs questions you are  bothering the daphne team and taking away valuable time from their coding schedule.  I know you think you are helping (or maybe you are just selfish) but you aren't so actually do what the bi-laws say.

The fact that you knew the daphne rules and asked anyway is outrageous.  They don't post em for their health they are there for a reason, no exceptions.  Breaking the rules once might leave you unscathed, but now if you ever do it again, the devs will get progressively more agitated with you until they ignore you all-together or even ban you.   Is that really worth hearing a "beep" in dl2?

Again, I'm trying to help you, but you aren't seeing it.

So in short it is a big deal.  You just wasted at least 5 mintues of Matt's time that could have been used on getting the cvs build ready for public release.

I understand points on both sides.

They shouldnt have to support what is not officially
done by them but as long as the emulator
is out there and publicly available - whether its
their build or not, people are going to ask
the same questions over and over and over.. its the
nature of the beast.

Just like mame, the devs get annoyed with many
of the noob questions that are out there, but if they
didn't want these questions, they shouldnt have made
the emulator available to 'the public'....
If they release it, people ask questions, critique, etc.....
it will never end and they should accept it and hopefully
grin and bear it... (Like hollywood stars and the 'prozzi.
I'm sure they dont like it, but its something that  comes
with the territory.)

I'm not getting into this debate again.. its been over done
too many times.  :)

Good points both of you. I'm  outta this one!   :)

I'll just keep checking back @ daphne's board every few months to see
if we can get our 'beeps' back... :)
...so I will ask you... "Deal, or No Deal?"

Your spitting in the wind trying to get HC to ease up. Granted, it would have been simpler to just answer the question,(or just ignore it!) but HC feels he is on a mission from God. Too bad really. He is excellent at putting together apps that help the community and he is one of the most knowledgeable about emulation in the forum.
Social skills, compassion and knowledge are not always handed out together. I had a student like him once. Brilliant, but would make other people (students) feel like dirt when they would ask a question he felt they should already know. I used to tell him to "Think it in your head, see how it sounds, and then, if it is not rude, say it" I had him in several classes and it did get better, but it took a while. (I had him in several classes.)
Unfortunately, when you are typing a response it has been thought about, and therefore intentional. I just look at HC as comedy relief. I used to call him Howard CASTRO, given his dictator mentality. He got upset in a post and chastised me for ALWAYS spelling his name wrong. (search for it, it is funny!) I politely explained the joke to him.

Back to the original question. Find Daphne 99.6 CVS from last summer. It works well. I have had it on my cab for about year. DL2 does not beep, but it is very stable. The newest release has a problem with Cliffhanger. I have tried it on the desk top but I do not feel that the other bug fixes outway the problems. I plan to play with it more next week. If you are interested, I will be glad to post my findings.

Everyone get ready for HC's flaming response!  ;D And remember, laugh a little.

Trouble is about the 'once its out there' it will just make them close up the CVS builds.

If they ask for beta input they will ask.  If they don't care to know they will make that known at the top of their forum or in the forum faqs.

IE, just don't ask and take it as not ready for primetime.

I don't think people need me to "enlighten" them. I also don't think its your job to "keep the kiddies in line" I'm quite certain your the only one who thinks that.  I also find it amusing that you can treat people like crap and then chastise me for "a direct violation of the rules" by being disrespectful of you. Rest assured, in the future I will treat you with the same degree of respect that you treat others.
I do believe you have a lot to offer the community but I think a lot of people would prefer it if you did it with a pleasant attitude.

Oh and Dave....... ::)

Hate to bring this highly argued thread up from the dead again, but It seems the devs at Daphne have fixed the DL2 sound bug. Got a reply on my post over there stating that. Who knew some beeps and boops could cause such anger? ???
