total noob question someone set me straight
« on: April 17, 2005, 09:05:48 am »
OK this is what I want to do.

I am running a 21inc CRT monitor, what resolution should I set it to.  In mame most games look right but is there an easy way to make everygame run so they fit the screen, or run in there correct resolutions.  Right now I have the monitor set for 800x600.  I downloaded mamewah resolution tool but I am not exactly sure how to use it.  Or if it could be used in this instance.  Basically all I want to do is have all the games display correctly.  The other question I had is that I am running the latest version of mamewah, and I cannot figure out how to make custom lists.  I used to have an older version of mamewah and I thought there was some kind of setting and I can't seem to find it now.  I tried to run screamings setup tool but it just gives me an error.

Thanks in advance to the community you guys rock!

The error that I get is just that the application failed to initialize.  So it does not even start.  I am using the newest version of mamewah and winxp pro sp2.

If your using a regular PC monitor, just use MAMEWAH at X resolution and let MAME just set the resolutions as needed...or at least thats what I do...you hear the click for a second but its not THAT annoying...otherwise I think Kevin @ retroblast wrote an article about using that tool...check retrogaming articles for one about a hybrid monitor (its a Betson one tho)

You have to install the NET Framework first in order for it to work.

For the MAME side of the question - I use a 17-inch monitor and run all MAME games at
-resolution 800x600
-hwstretch 1
-keepaspect 1

You need a vidcard that supports hwstretch, but anything in the last 5 years or so should.  Those last too settings should get you full screen in most games.  For vector games, higher resolution is better, and on that large a screen, lower resolution might look more "accurate" for raster games.
