VAntAGE is flawed.
« on: April 15, 2005, 11:37:15 pm »
I never appreciated the beauty of Mame, until I started playing with VAntAGE some more.

Working on a vertical classics cab, so I fire up Galaga.  One of the first things I note is during the attract sequence the ship is getting fired on, and the shots just pass right thru the ship.  In Mame the shots don't come anywhere near the ship until later.

In the spirit of accuracy, I'm going to hang up VAntAGE, dig my 300MHz AMD from the attic, and have a more accurate Galaga on my hands.

Well hellaujah for one BYOAC member praising the accuracy of MAME.

It seems that every time I read a post these days it's about someone complaining that MAME is too slow, and that the MAME devs need to stop worrying about accuracy and hack the games to run faster.  Peale, you've instilled new faith in me that some people still care about accuracy over playability.  Top effort! :)

But now your going to need a faster computer then that.

95 added starfield true emulation...  And it makes a HUGE difference... Ok the only thing I can tell is that you don't see stars on the post screens... But it always reminds you that its not perfect yet.

What mame really shines on that many faster emulators dont is slowing the processors down to the proper speeds.  This usually makes no difference in looks... but the AI can be VERY different.  Wonder if this is Vantage's issue.

For the interim I'm going with my 486, just because it's already set up and works.  So yeah, I'm going to need a faster PC.  I've got my dads old K6/2 533, I think that should be fast enough.  I've just got to be able to compile the DOS version.

Or, you could try using AdvMame DOS 0.95. One of these days I must do a new AdvMame setup and write a step by step guide for getting it working correctly on an arcade monitor.

Yeah, but that won't work on a 486!  ;)

Yes, I'm working on getting AdvMame .95 to work as we speak.  Last time I tried getting it to work on an arcade monitor it didn't go so well.  I got lots of colours, but not the right ones.
