Is anyone maintaining the marquee packs?
« on: April 14, 2005, 07:00:31 pm »
I was wondering if anyone is still maintaining the marquee packs and if so do they have a website?

I just visited the http://HTTP://EMAM.MAMEWORLD.NET/ website and the packs seem pretty old.

Thanks for any info.

I actually at one point assembled a COMPLETE marquee pack with marquees for all non-mahjong titles. Many of them were fakes, but at least everything had one.

Maybe someone around here still has it, I am not sure if I even have it anymore.

I might have to get them back from you, I have a nagging feeling that I may have lost them shuffling files and mame installs around in the last 6 months.

I've got them too. I'd host them, but I've feeling that a few hundred people downloading 190mb worth of marquees would kill my monthly bandwidth. I think I'll post them to alt.binaries.emulators.arcade, if that's okay with you.

Go for it, please label them as "Paige's unofficial marquee pack". We need to get those suckers circulating anyway.

Well, Emam is Eldio at www.mameworld.net.  You could try e-mailing him at "Eldio at uk2 dot net"  I thought he was still maintaining them or at least would have found someone to take it over for him.

THat is a newsgroup, you need to have a newsgroup account and a newsreader.

If you're not familiar with newsgroups (one of the oldest forms of communication on the internet), there's a good guide here:
http://www.slyck.com/ng.php

Most ISPs provide some form of newsgroup access for free. In the US, Verizon provides a particularly fine newsgroup service with access to all the popular binary groups, if you're using Comcast you'll have to pay extra (surprise surprise!). There are individual companies that offer binary newsgroup access for a monthly charge, like Usenet.com, GigaNews, NewsFeeds.com or Ugroups.com.

Thanks for the info guys.  I never new what newsgroups were.  I figured they just carried news, and I get enough of that on msn.com and news channels.  Looks like there's a lot of other non-news related stuff there too.

Hey, I did replace my rotary phone with one of those new touchtone thingies, though. ;)  lol.

Download XNEWS. It's generally considered the best news reader available.

Oh yeah, go to http://www.google.com and type "XNEWS" (without the quotes) in the text box then click on the box labeled "Google Search" (without the quotes.

I'm not a fan of XNews. I think Forte Agent is much easier to use, especially for someone that's new to newsgroups. Here's Slyck's Agent guide:

http://www.slyck.com/agent.php

I agree about XNews, didn't like it at all.  I've used Forte Agent since Windows 3.1. It just seemed a lot more natural compared to other newsreaders, glad to see someone else using it.  In the past year I started having problems with it though.  A newsgroup would be so large I couldn't get all the headings, or it wouldn't save attachments, and generally acting weird.  So I tried a bunch of sucky newreaders and finally founds Grabit.  It's pretty nice.  Seems faster and downloads are much faster maybe because it grabs multiple threads at once.

It's free so give it a try sometime Joymonkey, it may not do everything Agent does, but only thing that was even close.

Also, Comcast around here give you 1GB news service through Giganews for free.

Yeah you can find it once you log in to comcast.net with your account.

For me it's newsgroups.comcast.net, then I log in with my comcast email as my username and the password I set up when I set up my comcast account.

Northern VA, outside of DC.  No DNS issues that I'm aware of.  For Comcast around here, you sign up with giganews through comcast.net to get news service. You then have a "regular" giganews account.

Looks like I'm lucky, as far as comcast goes  :P, giganews is pretty good.  Only downside is the headers count as your monthly bandwidth.  I'm not sure of my upload/download speeds for news service or in general, but it seems plenty fast enough for me.

I just set up Comcast's newsgroup service using Agent at a friends house and was surprised to see all the binary groups here too. I wonder what happens when you hit the 2gig download limit though? Will your bill get bigger, or will service be denied?
I'll never leave Verizon if they keep offering unlimited usenet downloads, even if their upload speed does suck and downloads aren't quite as fast sometimes.

Oh, for everyone without newsgroup access, I'm groing to upload Paige's Marquee Packs to my website for a little while. If my bandwidth goes up too much I'll pull them. I'll post an address for the packs later.

They will send you an email when you reach 75% of usage warning you.  Also another when you hit the limit.  You will be denied access then till the month is up.

Paige.....Since you created these I'll direct the question your way. What exactly is this set. Were the all the official marquees (at one time) and you made the fakes to fill the voids? There seems to be some odd shaped, like 200x300, images in there. They look like instruction cards and also exist in the official pack. Why are the in with the marquees?

Thanks,
John

Thanks for all the info, and thanks for the your marquees Paige.

I tried to email that address that was given but I have had no response as of yet, I will probably try one more time before I give up.

btw, XNEWS is great, I love it, It can be a little confusing for a first time user to newsgroups.  I've been using newsgroups for years now, I like it better than torrents and tracking it down on the web. (I do like petrifieds torrent site though, great resource for emulator fans.)
