The collection is decent but it's that wall that makes it awesome.  Nice paint job.

I'm married and my console collection stacks up with that one... it falls under different systems, but it's probably the same type of volume.

But do you have it displayed like that?

My collection is in boxes in the crawl space.   :-[

You've got me there... it's all accessible and usable but not displayed in such a pretty way.  I'm going to finish half the basement for that reason, starting this summer.

See, that isn't really true.  I have a collection similar to his, though focused on other systems.  I see it another way.

He may have MORE use for emulators.  He is legally entitled to use one.  He HAS the games,  therefore he can use the ROMs legally and without issue.  If he wanted to, he could pack all those cartridges and systems away and just build an emulator box.  It's not the same... but it's legal.

Now, say his NES dies.  Rather than buy another, he just downloads the ROMs and plays them on his Dreamcast.  He does own the games, right?  That's fine.

It's a stupid catch 22, to use the ROMs you have to own the games... but once again, ownership is legal.

That collection is why I like emulators.   Cool room though.

People dont download roms they have, they download roms they dont have, otherwise they would play the real game if they had it.

I would walk over to my big wall of games and play, screw emulaters at that point.

EXACTLY.  For example:

I have a nearly complete Saturn collection.  Many of these games were very hard to find and others are simply worth a lot of money.  I modded a Saturn and I play only backups.  Backups I made myself of my own games.  Why?  I don't want to wear out the originals.

I have downloaded many ROMs over the years, mostly of games I have.  The only ROMs I have now are of games I own.  Sometimes you just don't want 11 systems hooked up to your TV, even if you own them.

I'll never understand why people with collections like that have such a tiny TV in their game room.

I don't think I'd ever dedicate a whole room to games like that.. at least not having them on display like that.   However, I do plan to have a room where I can hook up most or all of my consoles, and when I do, I'll be playing then on a nice large TV.

Personally I don't get it either, but I worked at an electronics store a while back.  Some people just don't like big T.V.'s

I think 50" (4:3)  is a great size and that's what I'd go with if I had a room like that.  But I bet he has the exact size TV he wants.

Why would I want to sit at a 50" TV, using an older console, at 6' or less?  That would look like garbage.

I wouldn't sit 6 feet away.  I grew up with a big screen in a huge room.    We used to sit 15 feet away and It was fun.  But you're right 50 is a little big for where I am now.  In my cabinet I have a 27" and I wouldn't go smaller, but I know why people do.

What is you're ideal TV?

So how exactly do you set up things like an Intellivision or Atari 5200 and sit 15 feet away?  Controller cords are only so long.

Your only assuming the length of the controller cords.  Not everyone keeps their systems in a nice rack under the tv and the a/v cables give you a few more feet.

I've got agree with you though.  50" is just way to big.  I think around 22"-32" would be my sweet spot if I was sitting back.

I don't see any conoles there that I don't have, but he has way more games than I do. I agree that the wall painting is what really sets this collection apart.

On the subject of TVs, not everyone likes to play games on a gigantic TV. I play my classic systems on a 13" woodgrain color TV, just like I did when I was a kid. Honestly I can't keep up with what's going on when I play on anything larger. Honestly I prefer playing games on a smaller TV, occasionally I play on the larger (27 inch) tv in the living room, but I don't like it. I hate playing arcade games on a 25 or 27 inch monitor, 19 inch seems just about right to me.

When I was young and playing Genesis, C64 and NES games.  I used to play them on a Citzen 13" colour TV that I got for my grade 8 graduation.  (18+ years ago)

Yes I still have that TV and yes I still play Genesis and PS2 games on that small screen.  As I love the fact that I've been using the same TV for all of my console life.  And I would never want to get rid of my old 13" screen.  As it reminds me of young years...

It takes a looooong time.  I bought my Saturn on release day.  Paid way too much for it... many of my games were bought at full retail back in the day, and many more when stores like Kmart decided they were worthless around 1997.

Some of those late release titles were almost never available... if you hadn't reserved them for the day of release you never got one.

I think screen size is somewhat like the arcade monitor vs. PC monitor debate. Why would anyone want to play games on crappy resolution arcade monitors?

I still play everything on random sized tvs.. my 24 seems "about" right for most everything, but when im at my folks house, they have the nice 53" widescreens and stuff.. and tbh, i realllly rather play everything on that...

tho i still have my mighty 19" Tv that ive had since 3rd grade.. its in my cabinet.. makes such a great mame monitor.. ^_^
