downloading mp3's
« on: April 05, 2005, 04:44:41 pm »
I'm looking for a site where I can download mp3's.  My cousin went out and bought an Apple Ipod Shuffle without doing any research.  He then calls me to come over and help him set it up and load music.  The kicker is he has an ancient computer running windows 98SE with AOL dialup!!

I don't own an ipod, so this is all new to me as well.  I quickly found out that ipod's don't like win 98SE, so I search and find drivers that allows 98 to recognize the ipod and I install real player 10 to use to load songs.

The next problem is that my cousin doesn't have much of a cd collection, so he wants to download music, and itunes will flat out not work on 98.  I suggested a few sites to try, Napster (also doesn't work with 98), Music Match, Wal Mart and Rhapsody (all of which only seem to let you download wma format, which won't work on ipods).

So, what are some good sights to easily (cousin is computer illiterate) download mp3's that he can then load to his ipod shuffle using real player.

My suggestion to him was to get a new computer...

I would return the IPOD shuffle and get another mp3 player that works with 98 and accepts WMA formats.

Hence why the IPOD sucks.

I would save the money and get a Creative Labs Zen or a Samsung Napster edition mp3 player.

I like that idea as well, I'll suggest it and see what he says.  I also warned him that when his battery dies he is screwed...

Well, for LEGAL  ;) (not really legal) MP3s, use a P2P program such as DC++.  I use DC++ and its amazing.  What sets it above the rest is that unlike Kazaa, you do not get any spam or anything whatsoever!  There are thousands of users too.  It runs off servers though, not one central server running on someone's PC when they don't know about it (KAZAA!).  If you have enough shared files, you can get into a server with thousands of people.  Try the 1gb MIN servers, they usually have a good 5000-10000 users, all with at least a gig of share...

I'd rather not go with P2P, his computer is painfully old and he uses AOL dialup.  I'm looking for a more ummm, legal download site.

If you go with a new MP3 player don't use Napster - you're only renting the music from them (i.e. you lose access to the music once you cancel your subscription).  I'm sure there are work-arounds but it's a crappy proposition whichever way you slice it.

Check ipodlounge.com for more information.  They have programs that might be a viable substitution for iTunes (and will work on 98).  Then just tell him to ask his friends to bring over some CDs.

I like iPods but they're falling behind what other companies are doing with their MP3 players.  They have the brand recognition on their side so that's how they're able to stay on top even with lackluster updates.

Suggesting file-sharing apps like WinMX and DC++ seem to be akin to telling someone where to download roms.

Not to mention ShapeD is an artist and may see things a touch differently than you guys snaking music, and at the very least, you should be dropping these things in PM so as not to attract attention to us by someone Googling those phrases.
