Removed TV from case, now no picture
« on: April 01, 2005, 12:22:14 am »
OK I decased a Sharp 25" TV this evening and placed it carefully in my cab. I unhooked every wire that was connected to the tube and discharged and removed the anode cap. After I secured the tube in the cab I placed the board in and reconnected all of the wires and reconnected the neck board.

I plugged in the TV and turned it on only to hear a small crackling sound and then nothing. I noticed that I forget to reconnect the ground back before I turned it on. Did I screw up the tube?? I reconnected the ground and nothing happened.

The tube has glow and there is static on the front of the tube. If I put my on the front of the TV I hear that it's getting power inside the tube.

I did remember when mounting the monitor I smacked the little things on the tube that adjust the color(?). One of them is cracked and I adjusted them back to where they were before I bumped them.

Could that cracked plastic switch be causing the problem??

I don't know what to check next. I am not getting any sound or on screen display either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should have been able to move this (assuming you mounted the tube direct to a piece of wood or metal bracing) without removing any wires/discharging, but since that's already been done, that advice won't help.

Without connecting the ground strap and powering up, that definitely wouldn't have applied the 30KV into the tube correctly. The two questions I have related to that are: where was the strap when you first turned it on---was it touching or very close to some other part of the chassis and could it have arc'd and fried something?  Second, since you mentioned you removed all the wires, did you get the ground strap properly stretched between 3 of the 4 dog ears making a solid contact against the lower 1/4 of the tube touching the black coating on the tube?  If not and just hanging there or completely over labels or something, then it's not making contact with the tube and needs to be fixed.

Crackling is generally caused by the 30KV into the tube.  Glow on the other hand is caused basically, by a 6.3 volt "light bulb" (heater) filament inside the neck of the tube next to the electron gun to help jettison the electrons off of it.  If it's still glowing then I doubt that you have cracked the tube as it should burn up with the presence of air.

If you did knock the magnets on the back of the tube, they don't affect color, but the positions of where the color goes....in other words alignment/convergence of the guns. You still should get a picture even with one of these broken.  Hitting one enough to crack may not crack the tube as they are pretty delicate and often sorta "soft"

So in summary, I tend to think that something shorted when you powered it up without the ground attached, or still do not have the ground attached touching the tube, or possibly cracked the tube letting air in and ruining it.

The ground was just hanging there in mid air before I reconnected it. I'll check the ground strap and make sure it is touching the tube.

The only reason why I discharged the tube and removed the cap is because it was the safest way to mount it by myself without having to have someone hold the board as I tried to install the tube into the cab.

I will double check the ground strap again and make sure it is touching the black coating on the tube tonight.

Let me guess.. a 4 wire pair, Red, Green, Yellow, Blue?   If so, that is the deflection yoke. If that is what it was. you may have had a large bright single dot with that unconnected.

It wasn't that one. It another set of 4 wires 2 white, 1 brown, 1 yellow.

There were 2 different places it could be plugged in to. I just plugged it in the wrong one.

Same thing.. if they were all in a single plug. Some manufacturers don't color them the same.

And the 2 places you could plug it in, simply provide an easy way to auto-rotate the screen 180 degrees without having to flip the monitor if you installed it upside down.

The TV had the 4 wire pair you were talking about (Red, Green, Yellow, Blue). They are larger wires. There was only one place for those to go on this TV.

Anyway.. It's fixed and I'm happy :)
