Replace or Convert
« on: March 31, 2005, 05:35:11 am »
I have a 19" Wells Gardner Monitor from 1988.  The monitor works and is currently connected to a Jamma board.  I am going to be putting a new control panel with 4 player support in place of the old control panel.
Obviously 4 Player and JAMMA don't work together.  So my question is this:

Would it be wise to try to adapt my existing 1988 Monitor to work with the MAME system I am putting in, or should I upgrade to a new Arcade monitor?

If I put in a new monitor, what all parts will I need to upgrade?

Would it be wiser just to put in a PC monitor?

Thanks
Chris

My vote is always going to be to keep using the existing arcade montitor. You'll be much happier with it in the long run. At minimum you're going to need a video card that can output the correct signal for an arcade monitor and a hacked VGA cable. But since your cab is already JAMMA, I would suggest buying a J-Pac from Ultimarc, it will make hooking things up a lot easier.

But I won't be using the Jamma, since I am making it a 4 person MAME

That's a Wells-Gardner k7000 series monitor. Nothing wrong with them. Just recap it and replace the flyback and it should be good to go.

If you are happy with how it looks then keep it. If you have a wallet full of cash then replace the monitor.

Sounds good.

What exactly is involved in recapping it, and what is the flyback, and where could I get these parts?
