Which emulators to use?
« on: March 25, 2005, 01:37:28 pm »
Tonight I'll be installing some new systems on my machine and want to know what the best emulators are for each emulator. What are you all using, what do you recommend.

Just for reference here is what I'm currently using:
MAME=MAME(dos)
Atari 2600=Z26
NES=FCE Ultra
SNES=Zsnesw
Gameboy=Visualboy Adv
N64=Project64
Genesis=GensFE
Master System=Mekaw

Here's what I want to install:

Atari 5200, 7800, Lynx, ST
Apple II (anyone use this?)
Commodore 64, 128, VIC-20
TurboGrafx16
Sega Gamegear
Dreamcast VMU (is there anything for this)?

FD -

I run Commodore 64 through VICE 1.15 (I think they may be on 1.16 now, I've not seen it). It appears to be flawless emulation of the full computer system (and I do mean full).

I also run Apple II E through MESS.

I run both of these through AdvanceMenu, and have managed to get seamless integration with both emulators, passing the commandline syntax to VICE or MESS appropriately. I even finally got my Apple II E to recognize the mouse as the Apple Joystick, which means for the first time in 30 years I can play SABOTAGE!! Wahoooo!

Email me if you need help getting either of these to run properly. Good luck.

I use Kega Fusion for Master System, Gamegear, Genesis, 32X, and SegaCD.  It works better than Gens for me.

VMU- DOS SoftVMS

Look on my downloads page at http://home.comcast.net/~cpviewer . I run them all through MameWAH. I have about 50 platforms running.

Enjoy,

hi.

can I just ask....how come there seems to be no SDL version of the VisualBoy Advance 1.8beta kicking about?  surely that would be better than using 1.7.2.  Only reason I plan on using the 1.7.2 sdl is so I can get rid of the bar at the top of the screen and for an Esc to exit option....(or is there a way to do that by default anyway with the 1.8beta?)

Menu Off:
After you launch it the first time it will creat a vba.ini file. Find the entry autoHideMenu and set it to 1

Exit with Esc:
Launch the app
Go to Tools/Customize
Set FileExit to Escape
Escape will be set to something else that you need to delete first.

Enjoy,
John

cool thanks, I'll have a go shortly.

mind, I have just had a go setting both versions up. and tested using Mario Kart Advance

one thing I've noticed, is v1.7.2 using jcrouse's ini file, is that although it works great with the reconfigured keys etc, the pic seems to be off centre and further down and to the right so I lose a bit off the bottom right corner...maybe thats changeable..

however when I use the 1.8 beta version its proper full screen, but the game seems to jerk, especially the sound a bit more....

is 1.8beta known to be a bit slower?  likewise it could be a number of factors with the pc I'm using for the arcade cab....an athlon 1400 which orig had a 300 or 350w PSU - the PSU blew but I managed to get an old psu from a p3 450 to work, which I think is 250w...tho I have the bare minimum running in the machine - I've heard tho that it can sometimes relate to sluggish performance at times - tho by and large things seem ok

I never notice the pic issue or slow down. That's not saying it's not there, just that I never noticed it.
