And my current optical just bit the dust this week - nice find.

Isn't that the weird hand-like mouse/keypad thingy?

Does it really work that well? Is it effective?

Yeah, that's the one.  They've got at least two versions that I know of, but that's the one most folks are used to.  It's got a learning curve, that's for sure!

The macros that you can assign to it and the lessened hand movements make it dynamite once you've gotten used to it.  If you don't game, though, it's an ALMOST worthless piece of crap (I mean, it's functional, but so's a crayola trackball, right?)

I prefer wireless, and think the DPI settings are a bit gimmicky actually.  Once I dial into a mouse sensitivity setting, I can adapt pretty well.  If I have to adjust the sensitivity the first time I ever play a game, that's about as far as it goes.

I love my MX700 for gaming, and now I love my MX1000 even more.  It's the smoothest, most comfortable mouse I've ever used.

As for the Nostromo's, I really enjoy them.  I wouldn't say they are overrated at all.  They absolutely have a learning curve, but give yourself an hour with one, and I'd bet you'll like it.  I have the n52 and use it constantly.

I'll second the MX1000.  I got one for Christmas and it is far better than any other mouse I've used.  I wanted an MX700 for a long time, but couldn't justify the purchase cos my old standby Microsoft Optical worked as well as the day I got it.  After using the MX1000 on a daily basis I'm sure that purchasing an MX700 would have been worth it.  Anyway, yeah.  I'd recommend MX1000 over this MX518 mainly because it's an excellent gaming mouse (though without the dpi buttons) and it's wireless which is a huge bonus.

...and so on.

That's what I said about my old mouse.....until it went crap-side up and I can't find anyone that sells 'em anymore, and was forced to switch to something else  :'(

I prefer trackballs for web use, and had a nice wireless Logitech, and all they sell are the damn corded versions.  Actually, I prefer trackballs for just about any use, since they're easier on my hand.

Well everyone has a different feel.  I think the MX1000 is the most comfortable mouse I've ever used.

I still have to disagree about the N52 as a gimmick though.  The pistolmouse... thats a gimmick lol.  Things like that I'd consider a gimmick.  I know the N52 is a love it/hate it type thing.  I've met a bunch of people who can't stand them.  However, they work.  I can play just as good with my N52 as I can with my keyboard.

I will agree though that some games simply play better with a ton of bindings, and the N52 won't work there.  For most games, it's simply more comfortable for me.

Why would you need a wireless trackball?  Doesn't it just sit in one spot?

edit:  By the way, here are some wireless logitech trackballs.     Maybe one of them is the right one.

If you don't like the Nostromo - try The Claw

http://www.claw.com.au/

There is most definitely a learning curve - Tried out a friends and hated it, tried it again a while later and did better with it. Have used it a few more times since, and am pretty sure I'm going to pick one up now. I defintely prefer the feel of it vs. the nostromos

Haven't run into anyone who's given theirs up once they start using it.

And if you really prefer the feel of traditional keyboard type interface, take a look at this:

http://www.tomshardware.com/game/20050308/index.html

If it were 50 bucks less, I might go for it instead of the Claw.

Yeah, you'd think so, but my setup is kinda.....let's just say you'd be looking at me a little more askance than you already do ;D  I'm a "mover" - comfortable to be right now, won't be in about 10 minutes, and without drilling holes all over the place, the corded version locks me into less positions in which to get comfortable.

Thanks for the link - the one at the top is the exact mouse I had, and other than buying one straight from Logitech for more than I originally paid for it, I haven't had much luck at ALL finding one!  That price there is still a touch higher, but I'm good with paying that price for it....mebbe happy times are here again :P

See....even more confirmation that you need to put in a padded room!!  ;)

As for the gaming mouse issue, I can't compare any of these mice until I can upgrade my sorry --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- computer. It's too slow to play anything worth the cost of buying a special mouse.

I like this thread though, I'm excited to try some of these contraptions out.

Being an in-the-closet computer geek with a decent job and low cost of living, my computer is in a constant state of upgrade.  New speakers here, new keyboard there, plug in the occasional extra hard drive, etc.  But every now and then something drastic upgrade gets done such as a new motherboard and processor.  This happened recently and my computer is retarded fast (only swine can't appreciate paradox  :P ).  But the funny thing is I hardly use it.  My wife's a graphic designer so she's the only one who really taxes it.  My life is too busy right now to become invested in PC games.  I mostly play my Xbox and Gamecube.

So...long story short, I've played WoW or City of Heroes or Half Life 2 or Farcry or any other PC game released in the past year (including Doom, but I just can't bring myself to feeling like I'm missing out there), in spite of having a system that will smoke through these games with aplomb.

I've often thought that the N50 looked really cool, but for the reasons stated above, I'm afraid I'll never find out.

I dont see what the big deal is about this mouse though, its not like its the greatest.  It would be nice to mod though!  I just bought a wireless kb/mouse combo for like 20 bucks and Im happy with it, especially how the little wheel can move 3d (moves sideways to scroll sideways).

Update: http://www.everythingusb.com/logitech_mx518.html

Latest verdict is that this mouse is great for gaming.
