upgraded to new mame, wierd stuff
« on: March 23, 2005, 11:04:09 am »
a few dumb questions.  I recently upgraded from .86 to .92.  I used clrmame pro (though admittedly not really understanding what I was doing with that tool).

Couple of questions related to this upgrade
1) several of the games I used to play (like donkey kong, packman, etc.) with .86 the display would show just the game itself.  Now, since the upgrade, those games have a built in game bezel around the gameplay of the screen and the gameplay screen is much smaller.  I thought maybe I was running a different clone or something, but it's the identical rom I ran with .86 and was getting just screen and now with .92 I'm getting a art "frame" around it.  This a setting somewhere?  Something new in mame?
2) Games take a lot longer to start.  I realize that with each release, they support more games and performance can decrease...but it's drastic enough where I'm considering rolling back just because it takes too long to start each game.  Any solutions there?
3) golden tee.  The whole reason I upgraded was to get the new golden tees, but the games themselves look no better graphically than GT97.  Is that the way they're supposed to look? (I've never played them in the arcade).  I was expecting much better graphics for the 2k version for example, but it looks almost identical the the GT97 that was already playable (even after I ran my res tool to make sure it had the correct res settings).   I can't imagine everyone was so excited for these to be playable and the game itself looks like it does.  If it's this bad, I'll just stick with GT PC.

Thanks for any info you guys can give me

I can help on #1: I'm not sure how long "artwork" has been a mame feature but I think it's been a while. You may have seen the change not because of the version upgrade but instead because someone supplied you with artwork in addition to ROMS? If you don't like it, you could either go into your Mame/artwork directory and just delete the artwork files, or you could go into the .ini files for each game and enter "artwork 0"

Golden Tee 97 thru 2k are all based on the same hardware, so yes they do all look almost the same.  Golden Tee PC is based off of GT97.  GT97 has NOT been officially released in mame until I believe mame 0.92, if you had anything besides Golden Tee and Golden Tee II, you had a modified version of mame to play these.

The biggest reason I'd rather play GT in mame vs. GT PC is that you don't have to remember to push the mouse button to start your shot and you switch clubs by rolling the track ball left and right just like in the arcade (duh).

As for the slow loading of roms, I believe there was something you could set in your mame.ini about checking roms or something, not sure exactly what the line was, maybe someone else knows.
