Code Freeze - full artwork ideas
« on: March 23, 2005, 10:19:45 pm »
Any suggestions for colors, designs, or alternate names?

I really respect the artwork opinions around here, so I wanted to ask for some help.

I am completely open to new ideas with the following parameters:
-This is a mini-cab, 14" monitor mounted vertical, 6 button layout (I want to be able to play the horizontal fighters, even if the screen is really, really small
-I am using translucent blue buttons that will light up like the Neon Mame project, I was very impressed.
-I am using a blue Prodigy joystick
-I am using 1/2" plywood, so I am limited to white or black t-molding (I already purchased black).

My original idea is to paint the cab white, use black t-molding, and keep the artwork all black, white, and possibly blue (or blue LED enhanced).  Something along the lines of: Code Freeze - Old school gaming frozen in time.

If I can somehow dye the white t-molding, then I would be open to other colors, but that sounds like alot of work.

Look around your local walmart or auto parts store for "vinyl dye".  It's in an aerosol can and goes on like spraypaint.  It will actually penetrate and dye the surface of most plastics so it'll last a long time.

Moooooo....   :P

No, seriously, I like the idea!  Maybe even putting LEDs behind the bullets from the ship!

Is a 14" screen the biggest that will fit? That's going to be one small screen for horizontal games.
I'm not a freak!...
Oh wait...
Yes I am...

i like it!

I want to know how the LED's through the etched plexi looks in person! can you get a better picture of it ?

Also, if you want to take the Icy theme through, and keep the mostly white color, you could try and dye the white T-molding some sort of cool blue color, and spray/airbrush some cool blue around the edges and corners of the cabinet to give it a frosted cool look..? might be hard to pull off well though...

good stuff

I'll light a fire under that project, I've been slacking lately.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll see if there is anything I want to grab from Pengo.

How about the CPO.  I thought about using the encryped code image from the Matrix (movie, not cabinet) changed from green to blue, but that would be too busy.  I also considered using a CPO variation from the Neon Mame, with my Code Freeze marquee and some kind of sideart on black paint.  I went away from that CPO when I thought I would use white paint.

Don't "light a fire" under your project, it might melt ;D
I like the blue EL or LED ideas...Perhaps a nod to something besides Asteroids would be more in line with your "Code Freeze" theme like Pengo , Ice Climber, Freeze, or Snow Bros.

It doesn't matter if you win or lose....it's how you play the videogame.

Yeah, I really wasn't going for an asteroids theme, would you beleive that?  That was just something I threw together quickly.  There is always the option of a side window with neon as featured in Neon Mame.  I'll draft that up and see where it leads.

How about something with ice cubes? Maybe even something that resembles an ice machine but with computer chips inside.

Something I threw together:

There's some potential on the marquee with the ice cube designs.  I'm looking for something to put on another layer (or two) of plexi behind the layer with the Code Freeze name on it.  I'll see what I can do with that.

I like the addition of blue on the side but I'm starting to think that a clean design with a logo might be good.  I like your idea of ice cubes though, possibly snow, icicles, etc.  I'll try to work that into a the logo.
