Hey All

Finally I am getting to start on an upright cabinet and my first scratch built cab. My restrictions I live in Nova Scotia Canada so getting 25" monitors is kind of expensive and there is only one operator I know of and that

tsk tsk tsk, you violated the cardinal rule it seems. from your photos it looks like you have a fully operational control panel. You've just doubled your construction time it seems. You'll want to "test such and such" game and "i'll paint the cab after I get the high score" or "I'll get artwork right after I crush one more ghost"

And you started with such potential...ah welll...

just kidding--looks like a fine start--but seriously put that control panel away until you're done

Capcom theme might be better than a Moon Patrol theme if you have a fighter layout. Might also consider a Neo Geo theme since you can get ALL the artwork NOS on ebay for dirt cheap.

If you go the Moon Patrol Sideart, you go Moon Patrol theme for the lot. Mixing and matching will just make creating a theme harder or more fiddly.

In my mind (relating to mame based cabs), an asthetic external replica/copy of a lovely themed dedicated cab(like Moon Patrol), with mame internals, is the ducks nuts. You still get that look of.. "Wow, you've got a 'Moon Patrol'"....and then they realise it plays a 100 other classics as well!

A modified vector trace of the original CPO with a few extra buttons added in to suit can look great. Some of the original CPO designs can take extras buttons etc without modifying and still look good...... in my eyes anyway.

ya i think you are right a moon patrol theme might look odd with a fighter layout. Since i already bought a capcom CPO i think i will go that way, but i don't want my cab to be all black so maybe i will paint the sides a nice red like a neo geo. I am still open to suggestions.

Is there any decent lookin side art for capcom fighters that looks nice and isn't expensive to get?

my next question is how should i be sticking this together, i see some people screw right through the sides and use wood filler to cover the screw, and some people make frames to attach the sides to. what would be the better way to do it. Will 1.5" #8 wood screws be enough to hold it together.

This is my first scratch built and I want to give it the best chances of turning out decent.

Since you are using wood, I would say that you are fine with screwing through from the outside without framing. Just remember to coutersink the holes. I think the reason people use the framing technique is so they don't have to fill the screw holes. It is difficult to fill the hole so they are not noticed, but since you are using wood there will already be a "rough" texture (compared to mdf, laminate) so filling the holes probably won't be that evident.

for the texture of my wood, the light side is actually pretty smooth, it was being sold as being "paint ready". I picked up some counter sink bits and some wood filler, a good coat of pait or two should make it look pretty seemless i am hopeing.

given this should i still just screw it together from the sides, and should the 1.5" #8 screws i have be strong enough

Just screw it from the inside and then you don't have to countersink nor fill.

Those screws are certainly strong enough but it all depends on how you brace your corners on the inside. If you use smaller strips of wood in the inside corners and screw and glue that to your plywood, you will probably be okay. You could also use 90 degree metal brackets screwed from the inside. Those are convenient, inexpensive and strong.

I wonder why you went with a moon patrol layout if your not using any moon patrol parts, if you want any measurments off my mp just ask, if your going to be detailed.

you could mess around with the sinistar or varkon sideart and put it on the side. either of these would set it up to look fighter-ish to a non gamer. good luck with the cab though, and really wait till the very end to hook up your computer and control panel.

Well the reason I went with the a moon patrol cab was I wanted a cab made for a 19" monitor because that is all I can get a hold of. Also Jakobud had plans for one and it looked like one of the more comfortable 19" cabs for two people to crowd around. Also it is a nice shape in my opinion.

Spriggy: I would really like to make it look authentic and I agree it looks really good when people do that. However one of the reasons I wanted an upright is so I could play two player cooperative games and fighters. But regardless you still got me thinking of putting on just some classics and maybe an NES emulator and have it look stock.

Tommy: I think I might need some measurements of the control panel and how it is mounted, how the monitor bezel is attached, and how the monitor shelf is done. Maybe even how the back is setup although it is less important and I can improvise that probably.

I have had a working control panel before I even got the plywood to start building but as you see it is all disconnected now and want to keep it that way until I am done building my cab.

Try Moon Patrol with ball tops. I don't think it would look bad... if you don't mind those for fighting games.

that should keep a more "classic" look to it.

Wade: i would be interested in stencils i was thinking of doing the same thing but i was not sure on how to make them. How would you be making them, I thought paper with some kinda post-it note adhesive on the back might be a cheap and decent way to do it but i am not sure where to get that kinda adhesive

Since I want them to be re-usable I will have to cut them out of something more durable than paper. Probably either foam board, sheet metal, or some type of wood (thin plywood, or hardboard maybe)? I probably won't be starting them for another week.

Well this weekend I will be picking up my router so I can do the slot cuts for the t-molding. I have a piece cut for the front where the coin door goes according to the dimensions on jakobuds plans and I have cut a piece for the base.

Well i can get back to building my arcade now that i finished exams and my undergrad for that matter.

here are some pics of my progress today. I had a little oops witht he t-molding cutter on the top of one side but nothing a little hot glue cant fix up. Still plenty to do but I wanted to post my progress. Now I think it is time to get some beers though

MP has two seperate doors. That opening would be about right for an over-under door though.

That cabinet looks real good. Just like my Moon Patrol.

yep the coin door will not be a traditional moon patrol door.

I will be using an over/under style I got a nice working one for $30 CDN so I figured why not. I decided it was not worth my hassle and the money to track down the original doors making this project more of a tribute I guess.

Even if everything else was done right to specs the only people who would notice the coin door was wrong would likely be ppl on a forum like this. I doubt the average person would even notice of care.

I was wodering if anyone would be so kind as to provide some measurements for the control panel to moon patrol. I have nothing to base it off of besides photos.

Or do you think it would be good idea to buy the multi-williams control panel, overlay, bezel, marquee, and do the stencil moon patrol side art. effectively making it a multi-williams running off a mame box with some extra games added. I would loose out on some fighters but I would still be able to play a majority of the games that I am interested in anyways.

Some other areas i need measured would be where the bezel is mounted and where the bezel and speaker part of the marquee meet, and where the control panel and the bezel holder meet.

I am pretty sure that if i can get the bezel in the right place i will be able to get the monitor shelf in the right place. So as of right now there is not alot i can do untill i know how the bezel area and control panel are put together.

Thanks a lot guys for the offer i figured i would post in the forum my pic of what i am unsure of.

what i basically need to know is how to mount the monitor glass bezel. I need to know the distances of the red lines into the cabinet and the angle of the bezel or something that can get me equivalent information. the bezel glass i drew is blue it would be good to know the dimensions of this and how it is suspended. I drew up some black block type structures on the top and bottum of the bezel glass on how i thought this framing might look.

Another question is the bezel glass how is it held in place? Can i just use marquee retainers to hold it in?

After some suggestions for themes, i decided to make my Cab a Neo, i bought a 1-slot and a couple of carts and i am finding it so much cooler then mame.
I guess i might be one of those ppl who like the original gear, plus it gives me a new collectable (neo carts).
I will keep my i-pac and my avga and maybe make a cocktail at some point and run some classics.
I have done very little work on my cab since i posted last but now i atleast have a monitor sitting in it and enough wiring to see blazing stars sweet intro.
starting a new job has prevented me from getting this thing done but i will be adding some new pics soon i hope.
