Going to kill my wife's boss...
« on: March 18, 2005, 01:14:44 pm »
Okay, no, not really.  But it's tempting.

Wife had her annual review today.

She calls up, crying her eyes out.  I'm barely unable to understand her.

She had her review.  Glowing marks all around.

Two hours later, the 'upper' boss calls her in.  She's being written up!  Why you ask?  On a spreadsheet - a single, nearly unimportant spreadsheet - she forgot to put in a single, non-important text entry.  Something that could have been *easily* recifiied.

It wasn't so much the writeup I'm mad at (although I think the words 'bullet' and 'brain' did come out of my mouth when I was talking to her) but the things that he said to her.  "I'll be damned if I'm going to let some $14 an hour clerk get me in trouble for this  (doodie)" and some other choice things that...that I can't even remember, because I'm just so freaking ANGRY.

She asked me if she could give her two weeks notice.  At first I was like "Two weeks notice?  You should freaking WALK.  NOW."  But then my more rational side kicked in.  We're going to have a baby in less than six weeks.  If she walks now, or even quits, we have *no* health coverage.  None.  As much as it kills me, she can't quit yet.  I'm rejoining the work force when she leaves, but we can not be without this coverage.

So why am I writing this?  I dunno.  To vent, mostly.  Advice as well.  I suggested to her that she talk with her boss' boss, and up the chain of command until this is taken care of.  Because, seriously, it's BOLOGNA.  My wife though...she HATES confrontations.  And as such, avoids them like the plauge.

My G/F just had her position "eliminated" after her boss's boss tried forcing her to quit by constantly intimidating her and outright lying about her performance. We dealt with this for MONTHS and it was absolutely horrible.

She toughed it out, and made them "fire" her. Not after she was able to negotiate a severance package, bonus and vacation pay with her immediate supervisor (who knew how great an employee she was)

The only thing I can say is, have your wife stick with her job. You need the health coverage. HOWEVER, if she's not happy, she should begin looking for another job immediately. If she needs to take a personal day to go to an interview, so be it. She shouldn't mention this job hunt to anyone in the company, or any friends connected to anyone in the company. It is her own best interest.

Quitting gives them the victory...moving on, without notice, gives her the opportunity to tell them to "F#CK OFF!"

She's six weeks away from giving birth; no one in their right mind would hire her.

She just called.  She's calmer now.  She was looking at a state program called 'Dr. Dynasaur' that covers kids and pregnant women.  We'd be covered for health insurance.  So that's a relief.  But I still want this guy's head.

Oh, the other thing he said was 'we fire grocery selectors for mispicks, I can certainly fire you!'

(backstory: she works @ C & S Wholesale Grocers, which supplies groceries to 80% of America and quite a bit of .ca as well.  The warehouse works get paid according to how accurate they pick cases from the warehouse.  A wrong pulled case is called a 'mispick.')

Peale,

Simply put, if the guy actually swore at her and he is the supervisor,

( "I'll be damned if I'm going to let some $14 an hour clerk get me in trouble for this  (doodie)" and some other choice things that...)

He has created a hostile work environment.  You have many options even if she leaves.  Take 5 min and call a labor lawyer.  I am not one to run to trial lawyers, but the image I have of your pregnant wife being cussed out by some middle-management (expletive) over an inconsiquential typo ticks me off a tich.

I am not saying to sue him or the company, but the jerk has created options for you and her, she need not take that type of abuse.

Have her make a Dr. Appt. for Monday for her "hurting back" and other "stuff".

*ahem* bedrest..

Should be paid maternity leave.  She'll have time to look around for another job for when she's cleared to return to work.  Give the aholes a two week notice while she isn't even there. ;)

Peale,
not to sidetrack the issue, but maybe this will put a little smile on the face.

Uh, we have sort of a problem here.  Yeah. You apparently didn't put one of the new coversheets on your TPS reports

You see, we're putting the coversheets on all TPS reports. Did you get the memo about this?

Yeah. If you could just go ahead and make sure you do that from now on, that would be great.   Uh, I'll go ahead and make sure you get another copy of that memo, ok?

2600, leaves
Saint walks in

Peale, We need to talk about your TPS reports.

Yeah. It's just that we're putting new coversheets on all the TPS reports before they go out now. So I'd really appreciate it if you could just do that. Right. Remember to do that from now on. That'd be great.

Now doesn't that make you feel a little better. ;)  Also, we need to start a kid thread.  Enough of us here have little ones or had little ones in the past year or two, I've got a 3 month old.

She gets six weeks paid @ 60% (temp disability coverage).  By law, she gets twelve weeks of materinity leave.

You guys are all so sweet! Isn't my Hubby a dear trying to take out my boss!

Evidently, if I go out on short term disability before the baby is born, I can collect disability from the company that is seperate from the maternity disability that I receive after the birth.

Can't wait to get that Dr.'s note!

This is typical behaviour. Companies don;t like the idea of paying maternity, and having to guarantee the job spot is there when the woman returns to work, etc... So they try to get them to quit.

NO MORE!!

I would say she's pretty safe now.  Any boss that fired a woman 6 weeks before her due date would be comitting career suicide, not to mention putting the company in serious risk of a lawsuit.  That said, one time a boss was bugging my wife.  I made an anonymous call to his wife from a pay phone.  I told her to tell her husband to quit screwing my wife or I was gonna kick the crap out of him.  I immediately hung up.  I can just imagine his face when his wife confronted him about that...
Please!  Give me the good news first!

Mrs P, a few questions if I could be so bold:

Was he right?  Was it actually an important error that should have been avoided?

Was he overly abusive in manner, or did it just seem that way?[/li]

Is that your hourly wage?  If so I think you deserve much more :)

Have you looked into sick leave?  My wife got 2 months off before the birth for "blood pressure issues"

Mrs. Peale says:

I guess in his eyes, it was an important error. See, I am a Union Payroll Specialist. I am responsible for the payment to Unions for pension/dues/Health and Welfare, etc. We have a spreadsheet that we track when payments were sent to the unions, received by the union, check #, yada yada, yada. Well, I forgot to enter the date the check was received in the Union.

Keith (the boss in question) used to be a selector in the warehouse. Thise are his roots in the company. He told me that "No $15.00 an hour clerk will get me in trouble" "We fire selectors for a lot less" and "I will not have someone work for me that cannot follow simple direction.". I felt the comments and a write up were punishments that did not fit the crime.

The funny thing is, I make $13.85/hr (as of today since I had my review before this all happened.) I wanted to say to him "Oh! Did I get ANOTHER raise?! Cause I don't make $15.00!

Does Mr. P really wear Star Wars jammies??  We've all been wondering since he made that announcement.

Afraid not, I get to see him Full Monty every night! Yum! Maybe he SHOULD start wearing jammies, we probably wouldn't have so many kids!

I would definitely suggest a nice letter to the Better Business Bureau as well, once the job's been "discontinued"....

This is typical behaviour.

The lecherous behavior by the group when a woman shows her face around?  Like we're all geeks in the computer club and a girl walked in the wrong room, but impresses us with her knowledge?   ;D

I'm going to go see if I can jam a hunk of steel wool up my nose or some other orifice so I can try to scrape that *shudder* off my brain

For the record, I used to pick orders for a food distributor, and they in fact DID NOT simply fire people for such simple mistakes.  They fired people for REPEATED simple mistakes, or they drummed up simple crap like that so they could fire problem employees and cover the company's ass in that fashion.  Given that you got such glowing marks on your review, I'm betting somewhere up the line, that dude got his pound of assflesh removed, and wanted to replace it, so he figured he'd take some of yours and duct tape it into the empty hole (although he clearly couldn't care less about replacing the empty hole where his heart used to be)

Now tell your husband to put some pants on (even if they're just "word-pants" for our benefit here).

Good day.

Would that provide balance?

Them being so big makes them vulnerable.  Small companies can get away with crap like this because they aren't worth being sued.  A big company like that never knows what kind of crazy punative damages a sympathetic jury might award.  I think you might be surprised at how receptive his superiors might be.

If you do move ahead make sure you record everything.  Keep every email, make sure there is a record of every meeting, etc.

I used to have problems at work. still do from time to time but I found this helps me.
I SIMPLY DO NOT CARE!!!
honest.. I would beat myself up all the time.. Did I do this wrong or that wrong. Boss would always single me out.
One day I decided Hay big deal if I get fired. ( we live on my income, My wife has been a house wife for 15 yrs) ( I make 16.00 a hour)
Not a lot but we get by.
honestly . what is the worst a company can do... Fire you. That's it..
If you wanted after the baby you would be working as soon as you wanted
We have survived on me making 8.00 an hr.
so when the next time the boss is Teed Off just smile .
so what if you got wrote up. (used to bother me to) It really is a state of mind
just be happy with the thought that the boss lives work. you work to live and he/she is just one miserable SOB.
after I got in my mind that the company can no way hurt me I am fine with work and in 2 yrs I have advanced as far as I can go with out going into management.
They have asked but i said no thanks . I want to go to heaven some day.
I really did say that with out thinking. Upper

Not sure about VT, but here in MA, $8/hr gets your family homeless.  People here have trouble with $20/hr.  Cost of living is that high.

Mrs Peale's boss's boss is an ass.  I have worked in several places and there is always one.  Bottom line, she didn't get fired. She just got wrote up.  My sister in law got wrote up for letting one part go down a line that had a burr on it.  She got yelled at too.

The overall problem is respect. Apparently this ass doesn't repect his people.  I'd let it go for now.  Stay low and look for a different job.

I had an account where I was negotiating some engineering.  My boss had told me to do one thing, and the situation called for the other thing to make the customer satisfied. When I resloved it, he called me in his office and said "What F'n part of NO didn't you understand?" The fact that the issue was resolved without cost on either side didn't matter.  I'm sure if he were in my shoes he would have done what I did.

I called and got another job within a week.  He profusely appologized when I told him I was going to quit, but I profusely quit and started a new job for more money.  Sorry sucker.

As it turned out, that boss got another job a year later.  I didn't like my new role as a supervisor at a UAW plant, so I went back to my old job with a new boss at more pay.

Things work out.  Just keep looking. It's a big country.

i did not say we did not have hard times.
Old RV was are home, Rode bus to work,or walked ,romaine noodles for dinner.
No car , no cable TV, do laundry in bath tub.
when there is a will there is a way.
I have been homeless once ( 1 month) live under a bridge off 494 and Penn MN
worked at a steak and ale , started as a dish washer.
lived in my car, lady hit my car , Police hauled off my car. No ID nothing . sucked big time. I learned allot about life then
but still nothing hurt me. I learned how to survive. No job can hurt me. i will be able to survive unemployed a lot better than any boss I know because I can do the sacrifices. I know how to hunt , live with what I got. ( not saying you all don't)
I never buy a new car. My cars are
89 blazer s10 $3,000 cash
88 Mazda RX7 $3,000 cash
I bought my 17 year old a 88 Corsica $400.
house is a fixer upper 64,000
paid off in another 8 years $350 a month
see my point? I live on the cheep. If I get fired so what... all I have to worry about is $350 a month. My unemployment will cover that.
I could drop internet, satelite TV.
I am the only person at work that has a house wife. I am asked all the time how do we do it. Very simple. It also helps that I do not handle the money.
I just make it. My wife is much better at such things. most of you know I do not have a credit card. I just can not have one. If I have one, I use one.
I am not preaching or telling you how to live. I am just explaining how we can live on $8.00 an hr. No companies will ever own me again, No bank, no home, nothing. Once I learned this life became so simple and I have no heavy burdens weighing me down. Changed my life. now I am making the most I can at work and happy.
It is hard to explain a state of mind.
I hope I explained myself with out upsetting anyone. not my intention. Just trying to pass on my OJT. And hope to help

The more money you make the more you spend.  If you have poor money skills, you'll always be broke or live pay chq to pay chq.

In the end, this is the key.  I know folks who have inherited large sums of money (the type that allow you to buy your house outright) who have instead bought a giant house with small downpayment and used the rest to fill it with nice stuff...  and then complain every month that they have no money.  Sorry folks, you had a chance at financial freedom and chose to piss it away.

My Dad and Brother paint new homes for a high end builder.  And usually the people that purchase these 3000+ sq ft homes for $375,000+ ($300,000US) have no money left to furnish the home.  So all they have in their home for years is a kitchen table, a couch, a Big Screen TV and a bedroom set.  As they can't afford to purchase additional furniture because of the huge mortgage payment.

If I ever get a large sum of money, I'll make sure to pay off all my bills and mortgage before I spend the money on something stupid.  Because when I piss away the money, I'll still have my house.

In my neighborhood the homes are 2000 to 2300 square feet.  The most recent sales have been going up and up. The last one went for $420,000.

My house is about 2100 square feet, but we got it dirt cheap 11 years ago.  Even with all the money we spent on improvements (New roof, new siding, ne windows, finished basement, etc) we could still make a huge profit if we sold it.

Why would you want to live in a place it costs that much? Why?

There are areas of the country where that much money would buy a ranch with 100s maybe 1000s of acres.

If you make $400K but spend all of it, what's the point? Just to live in the area?

I have never ever understood why people would do that.  I guess it's the country boy heart I have, but I really can't understand that.

Why would you want to live in a place it costs that much? Why?

There are areas of the country where that much money would buy a ranch with 100s maybe 1000s of acres.

If you make $400K but spend all of it, what's the point? Just to live in the area?

Why not? They have software engineering everywhere.

Why not? They have software engineering everywhere.  I'm in TN, and our AS400 stuff comes from Alabama.  There are software companies in Nashville.  There's tech support, etc, everywhere.

Not really so, not to a great extent.  Sure, there are software companies in Nashville.  How many?  4, maybe 5?  What happens if you get laid off?  The potential employer pool is way too small.  That's the case with most places.  Here, I can work for any of thousands of companies.  In Alabama, not so many, not in this field at least.

A 3000 square foot home where I live can be had for $300,000.  I kinda hate where I live, though, and plan to move to one of those places like ya'll are talking about.  Who wants a 3000 square foot home in a place that sucks?

Dear Peale,

Please kill my boss too, if it's not too much trouble.  Ya know, if you're already "in the groove" or whatever.

Thanks.

Around here, $350,000 gets you a 3000 sq foot 6 bedroom house.  It is quite lovely too, and fortunately, filled with lots of nice furniture...

Off to the hot tub with me to think about people in the desert in Montana :)

Ah yes, I am intimately familiar with that scenario.  My father was jet engine mechanic in the USAF.  It did him no good in civilian life and he too was chronically unemployed after getting out.  He probably still is...

Glad to see you got your situation back together.  Good stuff.

No offense intended, though, but I've been to Kentucky, and my children are not going to be raised in Kentucky.
