I use the free version of AVG http://www.grisoft.com/

It's just as good as any other software & gets really good scores on anti-virus test boards

AVG is free as in cost, but only allowed to be installed on one PC per location according to its license agreement.  For some people, that matters.

ClamAV is an open source product, and licensed under the GPL.  You can install it on as many machines as you like.  It is in the process of being ported to Win32 by various companies.  Be aware that it's far from complete, but it is being worked on.

http://www.clamav.net/

Follow the "binary packages and ports" link to get to the Win32 versions.

anyone knows how to do a truly silent update of AVG?
My cab is connected to the internet (by wireless) and AVG imports new virus sigs regularly, but when the cab was turned off it shows a window showing the download progress and a window showing that it's done updated. I would like all ofthis to happen in the background if possible.

I read the license and it says for personal home computer use only.  where did you see the "one pc per location" deal?
