Mamewah 101 - tutorial for dummies
« on: March 14, 2005, 08:38:50 pm »
Okay..  I'm no dummie... and maybe is cause I'm stressed right now with my two kids running around the house causing havoc....

but for the love of god, I just want to get mamewah working
'out of the box' just with pacman or whatever defaults it has
just to see how it works.

it would be nice in the .txt files that come with it, if it would
atleast give a simple example instead of just all of the command.

Okay.. I think I'm just over stressed right now and cant think....

I'll try again later.

Anyone want to babysit some kids tonight?

 ;)
...so I will ask you... "Deal, or No Deal?"

I'm sure someone will pop in with some great links for you...

but, in the meantime, you can checkout the recently released Mamewah config program.  It should make your life at least a little bit easier.

You can find a lot of the .ini files at JCrouse's site.http://home.comcast.net/~cpviewer/
You can find a lot of the screen shots, emulators, and layouts at www.screenshotarchive.com.  The only tip I have for the initial setup is to name your .ini file after the machine you are emulating and not the emulator.(nes.ini instead of fceu.ini).  In your layouts, they have to be the same name as your .ini file.(nes.lay ,  nes-main.jpg).  This will probably all be for not if you use the windows based helper that just came out.

Oh man.. this stuff is just hard to do when you are tired and cant
think right...... (and its sad that beer isn't even a factor here!)

I think I actually lost ground instead of made ground on this
tonight.. I cant even get a skin to come up now... :)

I think its time to start from scratch... with new directories, one rom, and one skin... and see how this all goes together.... :)

(maybe tomorrow)
...so I will ask you... "Deal, or No Deal?"

Try copying John's Mame ini file at http://home.comcast.net/~cpviewer/mame.htm.

Make sure you have your roms, layouts, etc. in the corresponding folders as well.  This should get you going. :)

OKay.. I've had a major breakthru and got lots of stuff to work.

-works with emus
-lists games
-figured out why skins werent working
-got music to play

- posted once or twice one the mamewah board mentioned above

Life is pretty good... but one thing I'm trying to figure out that
hasn't been mentioned on the other board yet....

If I want custom settings in a specific game... say
the   '  -mouse  ' command.... is there some way to get this
to be enabled in some games and not others?
I edited the mame.ini file for this, but really dont want the mouse
enabled in all games....

 ???
...so I will ask you... "Deal, or No Deal?"

  Dave,

Great job in getting everything to work!  It's not easy the first time...

Anyway, I seem to remember something about the newer versions of MAME only enabling the mouse for games that actually use it automatically... but only if it's specified in your mame.ini:

Code: [Select]
paddle_device           mouse
adstick_device          mouse
pedal_device            mouse
dial_device             mouse
trackball_device        mouse
lightgun_device         mouse
digital                 none

The older versions of MAME (pre .84 I think?) you would specify it by making a custom ctrlr file in MAME (not MAMEWAH).

If you're sure you want rom-specific commandline options, MAMEWAH supports this but it's kind of a hassle since you have to specify the commandline for every rom you want different from the default.  MAMEWAH doesn't know about parent->child relationships like MAME does so you can't specify a custom commandline for a parent and have to work for a child ROM.

Take a look at the game_specific_config_path option in your emulator config in MAMEWAH and then look at this post.

Im using Emuloader on my existing cab, and that
creates individual .ini files for every rom that
is configured outside of the system default.

maybe if I need to change 'default settings' for a few games,
I'll just config it thru emuloader and copy it over to the new
cabinet when finished....
