720 setup for 8-way joystick
« on: March 13, 2005, 06:30:09 pm »
In a previous thread around here...
(cant remember which)

There was a link to someones webpage where
they created a joystick for 720.

On his site, he also had posted how to program
an 8-way joystick in MAME to react for kind of normal gameplay.

I tried to follow his instructions... but his instructions were
for an older version of mame.  Now that they changed
the Config menus around in Mame.. his instructions no longer
apply.

I'm sorry, but dont have a link to his site, but
has anyone configured 720 to play like this
in the latest versions of Mame?

...so I will ask you... "Deal, or No Deal?"

I tried the 8-way setup for the analog mame
version, and... I guess it works....

Its kinda just as much as a pain in the butt to
play w/the joystick as you would think it is.

But.. technically... yeah.. the joystick will put you in one
of the 8 directions....

I dont plan on playing this, this way... it pretty much sucks.

Someone should design a joystick that uses the spinner the same way 720 does. I own a 720 machine and I could take some pictures of the inards of the joystick if anyone is interested. I could see it being a mouse hack also. :)

The only non-original way I've seen it work ok is with an analog joystick with a ball top... and you remove the centering spring/grommet.  Then use analog+ mame.

But even then, the original doesn't allow you to move in the center.  And you can find them for around 75-100 on ebay every so often... then a hacked mouse and your done.

Um, are you saying the current mame 720 analog joystick is worse then Analog+'s?

According to Aaron Giles, he modeled mame's current 720 analog control off used in analog+ (but his is a lot cleaner :D ).  They should be the same control wise, so I'm interested if they aren't.

Non - original controller...

Still not sure what you mean.

You see, starting with 0.84, 720 went from dial to analog joystick, I guess partially because too may people were asking the FAQ "why doesn't my PC analog joystick work in 720?" and that the dial way in mame wasn't perfectly emulating the original controller.  So your non-original controller should be okay in the current mame.

Thanks! :)  I'm gearing up on it, again.

I have the original controller.

And the only non-original controller that is even vagually playable is an analog controller without the spring (and replacement head).  The 8way hack didn't work... neither did using a mouse or spinner or basically anything else.

And analog+ should still be installed in a directory on everyones cab just to play some games...  720 is one of them.

But I haven't updated my 720 setup since analog+'s last release... But then again... I haven't had my 720 control panel plugged in for a long time... rewired and never updated it... have to get to that.

Timepilot and all SNK rotaries... (minus ikari warriors... I need to look at those games... but they aren't my favorites so not a big deal).... Direct connect all the pins and you have the best SNK L30 solution out there by far.

Light guns.  Best off screen shots.  I only have one gun and I still like it better then the normal distribution...

I think thats all I use it for now.  I don't use it for 49 way games because I have Daves adapter for it...

I'm sure I'm missing a few... But all in all... with a frontend that allows for more then one version of mame... you can specialize versions for specific games... helps a lot.
