Visual Pinball does not support joystick (or gamepad) input.

You might be able to use somethinh like Joy2Key or some of the Nostromo gamepads that can be programmed to to emulate keystrokes.
Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!

Ok, I tried out JoytoKey, and it works basically.
