Will this ctontroller work for an Xbox control panel?
« on: March 11, 2005, 03:26:14 pm »
I was wondering if you guys thought this arcade stick would work for hacking and creating an Xbox control panel. I was thinking of giving this a shot because it has analog capability...

http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=3972704

I'm guessing I can just clip the wire that runs from the circuit board to the button, put a fork connector on the end, wire the fork to a barrier block, and then run a wire from the block to the arcade controls. I'm hoping that will work. What do others think? Is that possible?

Do a search for pelican universal (in BYOAC forums here).  I remember reading people having compatibility problems with it.

I just ran the search and most of the issues seem to be with connecting it via the PC or the encoder. If I can get my rotating control panel plan working correctly I intend to just run a dedicated panel to the Pelican Universal's PCB and then to the Xbox. So in essence I'm using the arcade stick with a different set of buttons and the joystick. I figure this is a better solution than the $600 Quasicade controller which I'd probably be rearranging anyway.

Remind me again why you are doing all this?  Is this all just for use of the analog joystick (in digital mode)?  You can't find a PS2->xbox adapter that works with the left and right triggers?

I'm debating even going with the Xarcade board and then building my Xbox control panel around that. At least it'll have the same type of functionality that I'm looking for without all the busy work of hacking and soldering.

Finding a PS2->Xbox adapter that transposes the L1 +R1 to L and R triggers shouldn't be a problem.   But having this ability to switch your happs stick to either dpad or analog emulation is a very specific kind of thing...so yeah maybe you'll have to get something like x-arcade.

I am not sure what you mean hacking...

It is an Xbox controller to start with, so no hacking is necessary.

This is my control panel, and it is made up of 4 of the Universal Pelicans:

I have had no issues using it with Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, or PC.

Your control panel looks awesome! By hacking I meant rewiring the controller so it can run to the control panel. I'm not sure if you need to solder the wires to the Pelican PCB or can just extend them with a barrier block. Right now I'm trying to decide which would be a better solution, the Pelican or the X-Arcade. How do the joysticks work going from analog to digital with the Pelican controls? How do you swap between the two modes?

The three buttons at the top of each control section are MODE, BACK & START.

The MODE button toggles the digital/analog funtion.

That controller already uses actual arcade parts, so no hacking is necessary. If you want better sticks or buttons, you just replace the ones that are there with better ones. It is an extremely easy process.

The most work you may have to do is extending some wires.

[EDIT]

Thanks for the compliments guys. I can't really take all that much credit though. I pretty much copied the original controllers layout, and black paint and plexi was a pretty basic choice to go with. :)

No soldering, then?

The wires are soldered to the contacts on the microswitches.

If you are replacing the buttons and sticks though, all you would need to do, is clip the wires, and crimp on some quick connects, and as stated earlier, maybe extend some wire onto what is there.

Nothing that can't be done without solder work, especially if you are fine with using the buttons and sticks that are included in the controller. They are actually what I am using. I figured, as long as they work, why not? I can always replace anything that needs replacing later on down the line.

Thanks for the advice. I ordered a couple of them from Amazon, so I'm going to give that route a shot. I figure it'll be easy if you don't need to do any soldering to the circuit boards. I don't anticipate any problems, but if I'm not happy with the results I can always go with the X-Arcade route down the line. Besides, the buttons look pretty cool. I'll probably swap out the joystick with something better and keep the buttons for the time being.
