Totally OT: Software for Interior Home Design?
« on: March 08, 2005, 12:18:11 pm »
I'm getting into a new condo soon, and it's got a finished basement I'm going to gut and re-do to make into a bar/arcade.  However there's a million and 1 ideas I have on how I want to do it ,  but I want to model it first and see how it comes out.  I know 3dsmax is always an option, but I've heard it's insanely complicated.  Truespace would probably be easier too, but is there any software (or add-ons for normal 3d packages) that are made specifically for this?

IF not, what's the easiest 3d modelling software to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance everyone.

So you are looking to do a 3d mockup of stuff you want to do, or are you just looking for something to help you in laying out your space, like a room arranger type software?

Looking to do a 3d mockup.  I unfortunately think I'm going to need 3d modelling software to do what I want to do, but basically I want to design and save the room, and try different textures (paint/brushed aluminum/plaster&brick) on walls and try different textures on the floor, etc.  I'm re-desigining the basement so I want to see how things are going to look before actually going and doing it.

Give Autodesk Revit a try it's pretty intuitive and a free 30 trial can be downloaded here.  It's not a home owner application, it's for architects, but you could probably get what you need out of the trial period.

3D MAX is a great app, but far more than you need for this type of project.

www.blender.org is a free 3D software program.  I plan on using it when I get around to finishing my basement.  A little warning though...it's got a steep learning curve.  Many users on avsforum.com use it to model their theaters.  I'd recommend finding some online tutorials to get started.
