ROM Editing
« on: March 05, 2005, 06:29:13 pm »
Any tips for editing ROM images?  I would like to edit some text, and maybe some sprites/backgrounds.

Are there any tools out there for this?  A hex editor might work for some things, but what I really need is a resource editor, akin to "resource hacker" for win32 binaries.  I won't be bothering with encrypted games.

I could really impress my friends by patching their names into a game and burning an eeprom for the PCB.

Thanks!

There are a few tools to edit ROMs but probably not what you're looking for.  Tempest level editors, etc.  Check out some of what is available for Misfit Mame.  They are edited ROMs.  Your best bet would be to use a hex editor to find and replace the text.  Will work as long as the games are not encrypted.

I tried hex editing in Galaga, but it doesn't do anything.   I changed a bunch of plain text, but it displays as if I never did anything.

I saw some edited roms somewhere that had characters from pacman injected into a galaga game or vise versa.

Well, I 'say' they were edited roms, but I don't know that for a fact.  They may have not been legit roms but something else instead.  I'll see if I can dig up the link.

I found it but I don't think I should link to a page of roms.

The games look pretty nutty and have names like "Galagix" (a combination of galaga dn Phoenix) and "Tongy Paccy" (a combination of Donkey Kong and Pac Man)  If people can do that then it seems like they could also add customized text.  Perhaps you could ask them for help.

I could only find one Galaga file with plain text in it, but it didn't even cover all the text in the game.

I sent an email to the "Galagix" author, so I'll let you know when I get a reply.

Do a search for

Turaco Classic and Age,  they're rom editors.
