Aaaargh, I'm running out of excuses!
« on: February 27, 2005, 09:59:32 am »
I remember years ago when classic games were still in the arcades thinking I could master game X if only I had enough money to feed the machine.

Then when MAME came out I thought to myself I could master game X if only I had proper arcade controls.

Then I built a control panel with proper arcade conponents and said to myself I could master game X if only I had enough time to play the game to the end in one sitting.

Now I'm making use of MAME's save state feature and I still can't get to the end of many games.

To give one example, I can't get past the boss at the beginning of the third stage of Rastan (anyone have any tips?) even with unlimited continues. Also, I think I'm now worse at Defender than I was 20 years ago.

Hmm, what excuse shall I use next?

just tell people you are not trying to beat the game and that you are just reliving the moments of playing the game.....

I don't know...I'm 34 and I think I'm getting better!  ;D

There were a lot of games I just didn't grasp when I was 12.  I never got past the 4th or 5th screen  on Pac-Man, but now I get into the higher levels on Fast Ms. Pac-Man!  I absolutley sucked at Defender and Robotron as a kid, now I love those games!

Maybe it's just you... ;)

I am definitely getting better at some game types, like the afformentioned Robotron, Defender and Pac-Man. At the same time I am getting worse at other game types, mainly platformers and beat em ups. The platformers and beat em ups are largely memorization games. Memorizing the order of enemies, where they walk, how they attack, etc. I don't have the patience to memorize games like I used to, which is why I haven't really gotten into a lot of newer games like that.

I am especially getting bad at picking up the eccentricities of newer fighting games. I must have like 5 different Neo Geo fighting cartridges and I STILL can't do any special moves in any of them. Although I still have the SF2 and Mortal Kombast special moves for my characters (Chun Li and Scorpion) memorized.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.
