New Project - Compuhyperglobalmegacade
« on: February 25, 2005, 10:20:01 am »
Still some minor details to work out, but main construction finished the week of the Super Bowl.  This is my first project and most everything I learned from this board.  Thanks to all those who answered my questions.

Feedback is appreciated! (Bonus points to those who understand where I got the name from :)

Love the name! Slick looking control panel, too. Nice overall construction. Not too crazy about the side art - just my preference. I would suggest throwing some black construction paper behind the bezel to hide your monitor case, but I'm sure you already thought of that.

Awesome cab! I'd love to play it!

I like your speaker covers.  Make it look like the Dolby Digital symbol.

I like the art, and the red and black color scheme(especially the T-molding)... (damn you all on my thread who despise Red and black*) >.<

but out of curiousity why so small on the marquee?
and what exactly was used on your side art? vinyl decals?

i gotta get me some... ^.^

Looks Great! TJB,

Thanks for looking and thanks for the compliments.

This is my first cabinet, so I expected to make a lot of mistakes (and I did!).  I hid most of them, but the "too small a marquee" is chief among them.  Just a first cabinet mistake.  Not only would it have a looked better with a larger marquee, but with the speakers and the lights in there, it's very tight fitting.  It was a real PITA to wire up the speakers and lights.

I'm an old school player (I'm 31), so I wanted to iconic characters as my side art.  My wife works for a sign company, so she did all of the graphics (with way too much input from me :)  The marquee is some sort of backlist plastic (polymere or something?).  I'll ask my wife and get the details.  The side graphics were are plain vinyl.  We used vector art from http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/index.php.

Since I posted the pictures I have worked on the bezel.  I've used black vinyl to "outline" the TV (so now there's no more grey showing).  I'm also working on a better bezel.  My first attempt (the one you see) didn't work out as well as I had hoped (I took a piece of lexan and painted it black except for a space for the monitor to show through).  It looks like crap up close, but it's serviceable for now.

I'm running all of this on a Athlon 800 (very slow, no NBA Jam, MKII, etc. for now) with 256MB RAM.  I'm using Win2K with Mame32/GameEx as my frontend.  I would highly recommend GameEx for anyone considering a good frontend. http://www.tomspeirs.com/gameex/

I actually like the smaller marquee.  It makes the name of your cabinet seem even longer than it already is.  ;D

I'm pretty sure Homer's company was Compuglobalhypermeganet,
not Compuhyperglobalmeganet...

Damn, I'm not sure why my machine is so slow then.  Is the difference between an 800 and 1Ghz that dramatic?  NBA Jam is totally unplayable.  It's really, really choppy and stuttery (new word!).  MKII is almost playable, but still too slow to actually enjoy playing.  I'm running the latest version of Mame32 (.92).  For those with similar specs and a good NBA Jam--which version of Mame are you running?  Even though I have 1600+ games to choose, not having those two really stinks.  I would love to have a 4 player Jam session going.

Sorry to those who are trying to access the page and can't.  I'm having some kernel troubles that randomly lock up my machine.  I'm still trying to fix it, but unfortunately I have work 9-6 so I can't be at home to reboot the box if it hangs.

JCK - I have an older version of mame installed in a different folder on my machine, than the .92

This older version runs jam, MK and others much quicker.
I'll find out what version number it was so you can download
it and run it separate than what you are using now.

Crap.  Everyone's right, it should be Compuglobalhypermegacade.  I'm having the marquee redone.  Damn it all, I thought I doublechecked that.  Oh well.

daveg2k--Thanks, I'd love to get Jam working.  Let me know.

Jck - I just played a game of Jam - and checked
which version of Mame I'm using for that -
Ver.    .59
plays NBA Jam Like a beauty on a 1Ghz machine

I think you can get the earlier versions of mame right
off the MAME website.  www.mame.net

Good luck.

Version .59 works great!  NBA Jam and MKII goodness reigns supreme!  Thanks daveg2k.

The name comes from a Simpsons episode.  Homer created an ISP called Compuglobalhypermeganet.  Fun times.
