Here's a couple of mamewah layouts
« on: February 24, 2005, 04:53:04 pm »
I've created a couple of mamewah layouts I'd like to get an opinion on. My preference is the one with the classic characters on it. The round mame logo looks a little too busy for me.

I'm happy to share. If anyone wants the mamewah layout files then just let me know.

Hey there.  I think I Saw these on the screenshotarchive site, right?  I liked them then.. and I like them now.

I prefer the top one.. but wouldn't use it because of the hotrod advertising (which I'm not big on)

Otherwise, nicely done!

Yeah, the first one was on screenshotarchive but I've made some slight changes to it. In fact the 'hotrod' logo has been removed and replaced with a smaller version of the MAME logo at the top of the screen. I'm still not real happy with that either and may just remove the logo completely.

I'd like the 1st one, but only if it comes in a layered file that photoshop can handle because I'd want to make a few mods to it

I like the first one.  I think the big MAME logo in the second one is distracting while the first one is simpler and easier to read.  Nice work!

I'd like the second one if it were a little faded in the background.  Seriously, I think it's a great theme to go with for multiple emulator'ed cabinets... Big logo in the background under the game list..

Since I've had some interest I have posted the following files that are available for download:

http://webpages.charter.net/mcampbell17/characters.zip
http://webpages.charter.net/mcampbell17/round.zip

In each zip file you will find the following 3 items:
1 - main.jpg ready for MW
2 - layout.lay to be used with MW
3 - an XCF file that is the GIMP file used to create the files

Papaschtroumpf what would you like changed? That is one reason I posted these was to get others input on items I had not thought about.  The XCF file was created via The Gimp and is layered but I don't know if photoshop can read it or not.

Very nice work.

Can i port them to my Front End AtomicFE ?

I really like the second one. In Addition i'm looking for a logo for my Front end.. and the Atom... is very nice.   Did you made it yourself?

Please send me a MP , to let me know if you agree or not i provide your layouts for Atomic Fe.

Thanks

You are free to use them as a layout in your frontend. I did not create the  atom logo but got it from www.localarcade.com and resized it for my use.

If you do decide to port to AtomicFE let me know and I'll check it out.

In fact one thing I wanted to do but have not figure out how to do so yet was to make it into an animated GIF file and have a pacman running around in the maze. I know mamewah doesn't support this (yet) but atomicFE does so perhaps you can figure out a way to do it.

Thanks i will say you when i will have time to port the layout.

Concerning the animated pacman. That would be very fun. It is a good idea.  In current versio of Atomic you can not do that yet, but in the next version( or the next after depends on the time i have) i will add something which will allow you to do this kind of things. Something like the possibilit

I was thinking of making an animated GIF image for the background and have the pacman running around. I thought you could use animated gifs in atomicFE already so that should be possible. The problem I have is that the GIF would be huge if the pacman was to roam over the entire maze.

No, Atomic don't support Animated gif yet. I plan to do that in the future. I had already tried but i had a technical problem so i postponed.

The Animated layout in Atomic does'nt use Animated Gif.

Sure if your Pacman has to go everywhere , the gif will be huge. In that case it is surely better to convert the Gif to Avi.

Papaschtroumpf what would you like changed? That is one reason I posted these was to get others input on items I had not thought about.  The XCF file was created via The Gimp and is layered but I don't know if photoshop can read it or not.

The changes I'd want are mostly for my cab, such as putting a "cheat sheet" with a picture of my panel show which buttons to press for what, nothing with the layout itself.

I'm pretty sure Photoshop can read XCF, if not, well, I've been meaning to learn how to use the Gimp anyway...

Could you send me the Pacman labyrinth background?

I'm porting the first one to Atomic Fe , if i have the picture of the labyrith alone, i could a do a nice Animated background!  :)

Thanks

I've uploaded the maze to http://webpages.charter.net/mcampbell17/maze.zip for you to download.

I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for but the zip file has 2 versions of the maze in it. 1 with the blue gradient background and 1 with a solid black background. If you want something different just let me know.

I agree and, IMO, just changing the "hotrod" text to "mame" doesn't quite do it.  That purple screams "I'm a Hotrod CP!" at least as much as the hotrod text did.

quarterback - I prefer the purple CP top but you are welcome to change it using The Gimp. The XCF file is in the http://webpages.charter.net/mcampbell17/characters.zip file. It is in the layer named machine. If you have other ideas let me know as I may prefer it as well.

youki - before I save each layer independently let me ask what color you want the background to me. Do you prefer the black background or the blue gradient one? I can do either let me know.

Here's a dumb question.  I am using Mamewah 0.963 (Oldschool) and I would like to size this down to 800x600 without loosing a lot of the pic.  Can someone hold my hand through the process of how to do this.  I tried to edit the pic, and it just cut off the right edge and bottom.  I know this is a dumb question, but after jumping into all this, I have no brain waves left.

youki - get the file http://webpages.charter.net/mcampbell17/pics.zip and see if that has what you need in it.

mccoy178 - I've resized it for you. Get the file http://webpages.charter.net/mcampbell17/main800x600.jpg and see how that looks for you.

jelwell - I REALLY like the idea of getting game specific CP images and using them put that will take some time to do. Do you have a location to download original game CP images from?

Anyways, under the section "Art Files" there is a "Panels" item it shows 1251 control panels currently.

Animated layout? Is this a 1.6 feature I don't know about? I thought the main image had to be a static image.

Why not put a more benign, and generic control panel, then replace that area with artwork that is the original games control panel?

That's what I do on my layouts. This means the marquee, screenshot and control panel images are all changing per game - which means the arcade cabinet starts to look a whole lot like the real thing.

You have a MameWah layout available for download?

I think the windows image viewer has a resize function, but for all my simple imaging needs I use Irfanview, an absolutely free image viewer that supports just about any image format: http://www.irfanview.de

open the image with Irfanview, click CTRL-R (or Image->resize in the menu), make sure you select Resample and Lancoz filter (I think, whichever one say slowest) then enter the image size you need (800x600). It will resize the image for you.
I works very well when resizing images down. When sizing images up (larger) the image gets more fuzzy because it has to invent details that weren't there.

Edit: you will have to go in the mamewah layout editor and resize the different text boxes to match the new image size. Simply open the layout file in the editor, then drag the corner of each rectangle to resize.
