Monitor is dead

Today is a sad day. My arcade monitor decided it will no longer provide me with entertainment.

Here is what happened. As soon as I powerd it up, I could near a high-pitched whine and then nothing.    After a few seconds I could smell burning elecronics so I quickly shut the bastard off. I tried powering it up again but there was no activity. I run the monitor in Australia so it has a 240v -> 110v converter in case that's relevant. I will be taking the monitor out in 2 days but any preliminary diagnosis would be most appreciated. I'll take a photo of the thing once I've taken it out if info like that is required.

You have not posted a make/model of the monitor.

It could be many things.  By the description, it sounds like blown flyback (smell).

I did say I will be taking out the monitor in 2 days and getting details then. AAAAARRRRRGGGHH! READ THE E-MAIL PEOPLE!

Anyway Peale, you did confirm my suspicions about the flyback. Are they expensive? The monitor IS about 10 years old. That's all I know for now. Will know more in 2 days.

Sure, I read your post.  Sounded to me that you were going to pull the monitor for details about any obvious faults.  I would think that make/model of the monitor would be something you already know.  Since it's not...we'll suspend all discussion until you find out.

Edit: I know I mentioned it earlier, but there's a rather shonky looking 240v -> 110v converter plugged into all of this. Could the converter make a high pitched noise before blowing up? Am I jumping to conclusions?
