I don't know.  Will the whole Spongebob thing last long enough to justify spending the money on printing sideart and control panel art?  Even if it does, will your little girl still be into it in a couple of years?  Those are questions you need to answer.  I still label "Spongebob" as fad.  It may pull a "Simpsons" (be a 'fad', then dip into 'cult status' and then up to 'pop culture') but that doesn't happen all that often.

I've always favored 'simple' over 'complex' when it comes to artwork.  Little arrows around the joysticks, maybe some text (like Player 1 Start, etc.) and a simple background.  There are some stunning examples of very detailed art, but then I look at the picture and I have to stare at it for 15 minutes to find the joysticks amid the busy colors.  That's just me, though.   Opinions may and will vary.

Anyway, anything you do is ultimately your choice and you can always change what you don't like.  Good luck.

Obviously your theme has to be "Frankenpanel" with artwork that call to mind Tales from the Crypt covers featuring a cartoon-stylized-mad-scientist version of you weilding various overkill machinery (Chainsaw, plasma cutter, jackhammer, Jaws of life) to mangle classic cabs (four comic panels, one for each player's position).  Side art is you with the Frankencab on a slab surrounded by various Tesla gear shouting "it's ALIVE!".  Possibly with addition background sideart of fleshlike stitching (Possibly acting as a border between different shades of orange, since that's the color you want to go.
If no one feeds the trolls, we're just going to keep eating your goats.

I was extremely keen on a F1 theme for quite some time. Hoping big things for Weber this year but if I did go this way, it would just have to be a red Ferrari theme!   8)

I had previously given it (F1) a lot of thought. Ripple strips around the t-molding, putting the Ferrari horse into the backlit coin faces, flags on the CP and maybe a pretty F1 grid girl for good measure. I haven't dismissed the idea but it would take more skill than I have to make a F1 car look respectable with all its sexy angles and reflections.

A F1 Monaco cab still has a lot of potential and I don

How about something a little different.

How about a Rolls Royce theme?

Screw that...acknowledging that you're going with a frankenpanel means you should be going with THAT as a theme!

I'm thinking something along the lines of The Munsters or The Addams Family (and Lurch ABSOFRIGGENLUTELY has to be on there!)

I am hoping for a tasteful franken panel if this is possible. CP graphics will be subtle regardless of which direction I go.

I think I have been talked into going the F1 direction. I am working on vectoring a F1 car now and I will make some more decisions after a couple of days with Illustrator.

I have also been thinking of the franken panel rating. Basically mine will be a 4 player setup with an extra pair of 4ways joys.

Franken panel rating where 10 is the highest Franken possible;
I am hoping to stay below 6

I messed around today with Illustrator and a Ferrari pic. Not sure I have the talent to pull it off. Maybe just need more practice on Illustrator but this was a little disappointing.

Still keen on the F1 theme though.
