  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
I built my control panel, pretty much following the layout from Saint's book.  I've given it several coats of paint, and it looks pretty good - I even hooked up the controls for a while (but removed them now).

I'm wondering how to create an overlay for this.  I've ready the various articles on this site and what the book says, but I'm still confused.  I don't see how I can use one of the commercial suppliers, for example, since I've already made holes etc. for buttons, joystick, trackball and spinners - it'd be next to impossible to get them to match what I have, hole-for-hole.  What are my options here?  Should I just get some transparent paper (is that the stuff people used to use for overheads in presentations?) and print out little "joystick arrows" etc. ?

you can create your own artwork and have it printed at a place like Mamemarquees.com and emdkay.net. The only trick is in measuring or scanning your CPO and testing your art before you have it printed. A CPO from one of those places will cost about $35.

Take a look at my Defender resto (ish) cabinet. I started with a CPO that was already drilled, made my own art, and applied it after the fact, and it turned out great (wouldn't do it again, but hey..)

Make some very detailed measurements with your hardware installed and lay everything out in illustrator or vector program.
