Is a PIII 500Mhz enough to play Neo Geo games?

Obviously a newbie here so hopefully you clicked on this thread to offer up some advice.  My head is hurting from all of the research I've been trying to do but I still don't have a good solution to my problem....

I'm in the very early stages of building a Mame cabinet.  Ideally, I'd like to get a cheap pc that can still play most games through the mid-90's.  I've got a chance to buy a Dell Dimension XPS T500 from my work for the low price of $35.  It's got a PIII 500Mhz with 256MB of RAM and an 8MB video card.  I've got a compiled Mame version 0.89 that I tried running on it and it choked on every game.  So obviously this computer can only handle an older version of Mame.  Before I go through all the trouble of compiling these older versions to see which works best, I figured I should just come in here and ask a few questions to get me on the right track.....

-- Do you think 500Mhz is enough to cover a Neo Geo game like Baseball Stars 2?  Super Dodge Ball?  Over Top?  What about something much newer like Metal Slug?  Will it even be enough to cover a late 80's game like Final Fight?

-- I'm planning on compiling Mame version 0.66 and version 0.37b16.  Are all of the games I listed supported in both of these versions?  Is there somewhere I can go to see the list of supported games for each version?

Thanks for any advice you can offer up.

Read the FAQ, it covers this.

500Mhz and Metal SLug in version 66 most likely not. Try bumping that up to about 800Mhz and you most likely wont drop frames
