Any issue using an isolation transformer with U3100?
« on: February 06, 2005, 11:25:34 pm »
All,

I've been using an isolation transformer with my WG U3100 (listed as not requiring an iso x-former).  Is this an issue?  I assume not but I'm getting some blooming issues and want to eliminate this as a cause.

Thanks,
Todd

Generally an isolation transformer is a 1:1 device so if you have 120 volts going in there should be 120 volts coming out. I haven't worked on a U3100 but if it doesn't need an isolation transformer it won't hurt whether you use one or not.

Ken is right in that it won't hurt, but if the transformer is not large enough for the job, the output might vary with picture brightness. If the monitor input voltage drops below a certain value, the regulation of the supply lines in the monitor will not work and the picture will get larger as brighness is increased.
Also an isolating transformer simply wastes power if it's not needed.

Thanks Andy and Ken.  I turned down the brightness by just a touch and the blooming went away, go figure.  And I removed the ISO xformer.  No need to waste $15 on a part that is not necessary for this cabinet :)

what exactly is "blooming" I have the same monitor and the same seems like isolation transformer problem.

The monitors picture sort of rapidly zooms in and out bigger and smaller. Its kind of hard to explain.

Also,
If I smack the side of the machine hard the monitors "resets" and the computer inside reboots.

What does an isolation transformer look like and do. Is it the square coil like thing in the bottom of the cab? How do I bypass it to see if the problem goes away? Will I get electocuted?

If what I described is not  "blooming" I apologize.
Thanks in advance!!

That is what I was calling blooming.  You'll get it everytime the image chages dramatically.  By turning down the brightness on my 3100 I was able to make most of the blooming go away.  An isolation transformer will be the HEAVY squarish coil thingy in the bottom of the cabinet.  You don't need it on the 3100 since it has its own.
