Fielding opinions on School Desk idea
« on: February 04, 2005, 10:56:38 am »
I have a small school desk. I'm not sure from what era. Maybe 80's, 70's...

It's real small, has a chalk board on the top (which is also the lid that opens up) and it has metal legs.

I was going to refinish it, but I've also been contemplating turning it into a tiny MAME desk. I'd have to use flat screen monitor. I'd most likely sell it. Is this worth doing?

No.  It's hard enough to sell any type of cocktail mame aside from MsPac style I think.  A school desk would be a real tough sale.

depends--if it looks good then i think you could find a home for it--you might not make as much as you would with a midway style but i think you're expenses would be covered if you kept them down.  I have this one which i plan on selling some day--once its finished that is...

as you can see i got rid of the steel legs--i thought they looked pretty crappy but if you can get the chrome look back, then they might be worth saving.  Lets see what you are starting with...

I know I wouldn't buy it. I would rather buy somthing that looks like a real arcade machine. The whole point of BYOAC is to recreate the arcade experience and bring back the memories of the past, not to build somthing wierd that doesn't even fit in. But if you like it then do it. At least it's creative, I'll give you that

I like it.  ;D

I think the "school desk" MAME is a new and innovative idea.

But I doubt anyone would pay for it unless it turned out awesome.

Thing is, look at what Bartops are fetching. So there's a niche. I'm thinking of the rich dad wanting something for a kid...

I'll post a pic tonight.

(What's that Astro Fighter nonsense....? I'm confused  ??? )

I think it's a cool idea.  It would be neat if to the average eye it really looked like a desk and only upon closer inspection would one see that is was not.... You should have the controls hidden somehow and maybe have them flip out when you are ready to play... I don't know... neat idea though!

Menace - I could be wrong, but I'm not sure he was suggesting that he didn't like yours, or wouldn't buy YOURS.  He might have been responding to the original poster. ? Not sure though.

Oh, I got the impression he was slagging me for what he thought was a home brew cabinet, when in fact its just a sega school desk cabinet with modded legs--my mistake if thats the case.

Dam that looks good, sorry about my first responce, that was before seeing what it looked like (the photo link wasn't working at the time).  I feel very Dumb right now. I never knew that you were talking about a real arcade cab that was called a "school desk style", I thought you were talking about a Real school desk that students once used.

Keep up the nice work.

I gotta admit, I thought the same thing.  It was the chalk board talk that made me think it was an actual school desk!

It IS an actual school desk!
You've got people in this thread replying to others without specifying who they are replying to, and then the next guy replies based on that thinking he's talking about something else and next thing you know you don;t know who's talking to who about what or why!  ;D

I should re-start this damn thread. Time to go take that photo now...

Truthfully the idea sounds kind of silly to me.

In general people don't like the school desk style cocktails all that much and they never seem to sell for very much.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.
