I will pay someone $20 for compiling for me *****
« on: February 03, 2005, 10:16:39 pm »
Hello,

I have absolutely no programing skills at all and I write all day at a computer and don't feel like learning what I need to know(i.e. lazy)

I need someone to compile command line mame .86 with the Q*bert patch file from:
http://www.johnsretroarcade.com/downloads.asp

Compile it and email it to me or make it available for me to download, and I will pay you $20 for your time(and talent).

John was nice enough to send me mame .91 with the Q*bert patch compiled, but I am getting a stutter in alot of my games that I never had when I was using .86. So I want to go back to .86. I need the Q*bert patch so my knocker will fire.

Can someone help me to make my Q*Bert perfect?

you will need a switch to turn the knocker on an off as it uses the keyboard LEDs.  Other games use those too.

It isn't hard to compile.  No programming skills requires.  Just follow instructions.

Lets make sure it works first :) I had to edit the make file to work with the new build environment, should be done in 10ish minutes

Alright, all compiled. Thing is the patch wouldn't apply as givin from that site, so I manually appied it. It compiled alright, so it should work. Any other patches you want me to compile into the code before sending it off?

Awesome. Nothing else to add really. The only extra thing I need is the Q*bert knocker. I am off to bed now, I will try it in the morning.

Thanks again,

you will need a switch to turn the knocker on an off as it uses the keyboard LEDs.  Other games use those too.

If you're only using the keyboard LEDs for the knocker, I think a better option than using a switch would be to use separate versions of MAME selected through the frontend. A qmame.exe for the Q*bert games and a standard mame.exe with the LEDs disabled.
And as long as you're going to do a custom compile, you could make a single compile with the LED function only enabled in the Q*bert games if your frontend doesn't allow for multiple executables.

Keyboard LED's are used for other things in mame as well, like flashing player start buttons. The Q*Bert mame using the Scroll Lock LED which is uused in all of like 20 games. So having a second compile isn't very practical.

btw, compiling mame is SO MUCH EASIER then it was about 5 years ago.  You download each of the tools.  You install them all... Follow the directions... type make... and your done.

It used to take 1/2 day to get it setup for the first time.

The only touble is the 'u' builds.  These take an extra step of adding patches in the proper order....

But anyway, not knowing C at all... It takes about 10 minutes after the files are downloaded.... very very easy.

Why don't they switch the knocker over to the parallel port?  It won't set it off during bootup this way.

As someone else was getting at - when this thread started,

You had a custom 0.91 which worked fine with Qbert, but sluggish for other games.

You had a non-custom 0.86 which was fine for other games but lacked the qbert patch.

Most likely, you could have easily set up your frontend to launch qbert using 0.91 and all other games using 0.86 and saved all this effort.

Mainly just posting so others see the options.

And as LilWolf said, it's very simple to compile these days . . .

Well, I didn't really have a chance to test it. When I started up, the bios couldn't find my hard drive. I took out the hard drive and hooked it to my home PC and I'm pretty sure it just died on me. My pc can't find the drive and it makes noises like it's trying to spin but then it stops suddenly. Now I am screwed for my super bowl party.

major bummer.

So the knocker will bang during boot up also?  That's annoying.  Is there anyway of avoiding this - other than putting it on a switch?

I agree that using the serial or parallel ports would be better than the leds....  Too many other games use the leds..
Thanks,
JD

I bought a new 160gig Seagate HD for $54 after rebate from Fry's today. I am only using the drive for mame and the front end so it's a major bummer that I'm wasting about 150gigs of space. They wanted $79 for the 40gig model, go figure.

Now that I think about it. My games were probably stuttering due to the failing hard drive!!!

Anyway, It took me about 5 hours of fooling with it to get it perfect. I finally did and yes your compiled mame works perfect. Thank you once again.

If you don't want payment, I will glady donated to a charity of your choice. Just let me know.

Thanks you for help.

That's a huge amount of wasted space.  Why didn't you get a used 10G drive off eBay for $10?

Reliability?  I wouldn't ever buy a used drive, especially since they are so cheap new nowadays.

I used to have this forman that referred to the guys and I as girls, always referring to us as 'ladies' and such, I started to wonder why a fella would get so much enjoyment calling guys gals, kinda like he has this gender role reversing fantasy.

I'm glad I don't work for that guy anymore.

I suppose you have a gender role reversing fantasy too, eh? Why drag me in to it?

They're cheap enough, I suppose.  With the projects I do, I almost always go for smaller older drives.  The important thing is, of course, to back up everything.  Luckily, I haven't had to replace a drive yet.

Okay, I'm not going to take sides here -

Spystyle - I tend to frequent the main forum, and will occasionally post there initially so my post will get greater exposure, knowing it will eventually get moved where it belongs.

KoolmoeCraig - Spystyle is really trying to help you out for the future though.  If you want to reach people that can compile their own MAME, they tend to be in the software forum.  And anyone later that wants info on compiling is more likely to browse the software forums.

Peace!!!
