CHANKAST: Anybody actively using this on their arcade cabinet?
« on: February 02, 2005, 12:49:08 pm »
Is anybody here actively using Chankast (Dreamcast emulator) on their arcade cabinet?  I've installed it on my main PC (not my MAME machine) and it runs GREAT but has some pretty bad slowdowns in-game from what I've seen...  The problem isn't my computer either (it's an Athlon64 3500, 1GB RAM, 6800GT video card, etc...)

So... does anybody here actively using Chankast on their arcade cabinet?  If so, then which games do you play?

Your post sounds contradictory to me.  How is it limited and what games do you run?  I don't have a fast enough computer to find out for myself.   :'(

I'm actually in the process of wiring up Dreamcast controllers as we speak.  I'm only interested in using Chankast to supplement the Dreamcast (eg. play as many games using Chankast as possible and then use the Dreamcast for the rest of the games).

As a side note, it's DAMN HARD to seperate the GND wires from all of my arcade controls.  (I was told I have to seperate P1/P2 GND connections due to the Dreamcast controllers).

*sigh*  This is turning into a 3-day mini project.

I have a dc as well.  I bought it when it was new and expensive too!  I was just curious how its emulation was progressing.

It doesn't seem to work well enough on a 2.4ghz system.  I hear that there is frame rate issues in many games on any system.

But I don't care as much now that I have a dreamcast in a cab.  But if I could throw all isos on a 200gig drive and an emulator... I would replace it...

It works... but the frameskipping is royally screwed up.  By down throttling the processors you can get it running at a good framerate.

Well the wrapper i made for it isn't updated, so atm, there isn't a good way to play chankast in a fe at a playable speed.  When I get the upcoming dk releases out of the way I'll be releasing a solution.

Hi,

I have lot of user of my front end  in europe which use Chankast in their arcade cabinet via my Front End.  And they seems very Happy with.

There is a tutorial for chanckast in my online doc written by one of my contributor.

I didn't try myself because i own 6 dreamcasts... and i don't really need to use an emulator.

I don't know if it will help you but you could have a look to my documentation.

cheers,

I'm currently debating whether to hook my Dreamcast up to my cabinet or hoping emulation catches up with it.   Does Chankast run any differently (better) for the non 3D games?   All I'd be initially interested in running of it would be SFIII: 3rd Strike.   It's the only game that I yearn to play off the cabinet.  Everything else I'd prefer to use the Dreamcast controls for.

Generally, Emulation for a system takes a long while.... Chankast i would say is still fairly new to the market... give it another year for the emulator to advance.

Generally, Emulation for a system takes a long while....

And sometimes... it outright stalls.  Take n64 emulation for example... the system is dead and buried, but emulation status is still stuck at "so-so" with apparently no one working on any major improvment.

Chankast seems to be in a state of limbo atm.  I don't see it progressing much further unless the authors get motivated again.  The fact that most video game nuts already have a dreamcast doesn't help for motivation.
