Build Your Own Big Red Button of Doom!

Apparently this Japanese company sells a BIG RED BUTTON OF DOOM.  It's just a prop and doesn't work at all, but I'm wondering...we are a "build your own" kinda community here, right?  Wouldn't this be awesome to have on your desktop, maybe with a USB interface and having that BIG RED BUTTON mapped to something clever like ctrl-alt-del?

I haven't really looked, but I'm assuming that these parts could be had from Mouser or Parts Express or somewhere (locking key and all)?  Maybe an I-PAC VE (although it doesn't save custom mappings, dammit)?  Any thoughts? :)

How about mapping it to a DOS command to wipe your C drive, kinda creates some real danger.

For when the ROM police come knockin' ?  Make sure it has a timer and is hooked up to an intercom/speaker.  Gotta have a countdown.  "T minus 3 sec to detonation **SIREN**  **SIREN**  T minus 2 sec..."

True, true LOL. That would really make it. You'll need to get at least one of those horn shaped speakers for it.

Sasquatch,

Yes, the parts are available from Mouser, as I mentioned in this thread

I am thinking of incorporating something like it as the power switch for my cab.  The locking key would be handy when I don't want the neighbor kids from messing wih the PC.

PS.  How was the snow down by you?

Just remember the timer always stops at 1 sec to detonation...just like in the movies

If you are going to go that far with it, you HAVE to use the countdown voice ("Mother??") from Aliens.

Better yet, hook it up to a battery and line your hard drive with Thermite. Of course add all the sound effects and you should get a nice little display of destruction  :)

And make sure that if the ROM police try to disable it that you don't have 1 blue wire and 1 red wire to cut. Make sure ther are 37 wires all of them black.

Have a massive electromagnet set up on your hard drive, with activation buttons hidden randomly in your domicile.  Unwanted company shows up, magnet get triggered, data is *gone.*

Hmm. I think I really am going to make one. Just without the toggle(not really sure what they are called) switches on the side. Cause I can't think of anything they could do except turn the power to the monitor on/off.

D'oh, I didn't even see that thread.  Now I'm gonna have to build this thing huh? :)

P.S. The snow wasn't too bad.  Thank God my little putt-putt hand-me-down snowblower actually started though!

I don't have to worry about the old hand me down snowblower.

I have a new one that would make Tim Taylor proud!

10 Hp, electric Start, 6 forward speeds, 2 reverse,  2 stage impeller, headlight,  differential steering.

Nothing slows this thing down, not even the stuff that the snow plow leaves on the end of the driveway.  It even gobbles up and spits out the Sunday newspaper! :o

Speaking of cutting the wires, a buddy of mine has this as his sig.

"To disarm bomb, cut the red wire.  But first, cut the blue one."

*lol*

And as far as a "do nothing" gizmo, how about this?

The big red button is often identified amongst electrical wholesalers as an "emergency stop" button if anybody is serious about building one!

They are big and bright so it can be punched in a hurry. (As opposed to fiddling with a volcano button while your workmate gets dragged into a packaging machine...)
