what was this game?
« on: January 17, 2005, 10:16:10 am »
ok for the life of me i have been unable to figure out what this is ...

sometime in the early 80's , my brother and i went down to the shore and found this game we liked , we have never been able to find it agin.

basicy it went like this , 2 player at the same time , both had spaceships and it was setup like 1942 type of playfield ( meaning that you are constantly moving forward through space ) .... one of the ships was this big thing that shot big and slow , the other ( each ship controled by a player ) was a much smaller ship that shot real fast ( but less damage ) ... the thing that made the game cool was that the small ship could "dock" on the other players ship and basicly become a gun turrent for the other player , one player drove the ship and shot big slow shots , the other was a little turrunt on top spinning around and fending off incomming missles etc.

the only other thing i can rember is that the "boss" was this big green head .. so insted of a mother ship it was a medusa alien hybreed

my brother is visiting in a month or 2 and it would be soo cool if i could pin down what this game is , their is of course the possablilty it's not emulated , but going through EVERY SINGLE rom i have will take ages ( at least i clean up a bit , ig, get rid of the 200 majongs etc )

If you didn't say vertical scoller,(you didn't, but that's what you described), it could have been blasteroids.  Which is an asteroids type game, but full color and 2 players at once.  You can change the size or your ships.  If 1 player is set for small and the other is set for large, the ships can dock together, and one will function as a turrent.  The boss is also a big ugly green head.  Even if it's not what you are looking for, you might like it anyway.

Hope that helps!

It may be Hyper-dyne SideArms. That was my favorite game and it sounds a little bit the same as you describe. Check out the link to see:

Blasteroids is an awesome game!

I was thrown off when you said vertical scroller though.  But glad to help you find it!

it's blasteroids. though blasteroids is a vertical scroller. More of an Asteroids-type game.

but it's fun. used spinners for gameplay.

dont mean to hijack this thread, but because its about a game you have played and cant remember what its called or if its emulated, im going to ask here...
There was this game, I believe an early 90's game, where I believe on the sideart there was a guy with long blonde hair and a guy with long brown hair, they may have been cops, and it was a sitdown driving type game. In gameplay, you would be on a road/highway shooting with a lightgun at the screen while driving with a steering wheel also. Anyone have any idea what game Im talking about? Shooter/slash driver earlt 90s game...

Gah!  Of course it's Lucky & Wild.  I knew it was a Sega game, and went looking thru the Sega titles for it.  Boy, did I screw up.

Edit: I THOUGHT it was a Sega game.  Guess it's Namco!

I just "playtested" it on mine..... really hard to do since you have to drive AND shoot..... and I don't have the light gun (yet)....

i remember it being awkward to play in the arcade, u had to steer and shoot, i would usually have to play with another person and have one of us shoot and one of us drive, it must be extremely awkward in mame.

I remember playing two awesome games, and call upon fellow Arcade fans to help me remember their names please!

This is all I can remember:

I played them in the early nineties, I'm pretty sure they didnt have their own cabinet, but were one of say 4 or 5 games in a menu.

The first one reminded me a lot of Golden Axe, however it was strictly side to side scroller with no 'depth of field'. It was like a fantasy platformer, and I think you were a warrior. The only enemies I can remember were lions with dragon heads on their backs.

The second was a ninja style platforming game similiar to Double Dragon. You used to throw ninja stars, and could get power ups to throw more stars at once. I seem to remember them getting quite big and going almost fulll screen as well.

These details are very vague I know, if anyone has even remote ideas I'd love to hear them :)

Rastan is the first one.
Ninja Combat is the second.
