Why can't I get some games to display fullscreen?
« on: January 15, 2005, 11:15:58 am »
I'm running Mamewah and regular Mame on my machine.  Most of my games fill the screen when running (especially the old ones--Pacman, Galaga, etc., but also Uo Poko, the Bubble Bobbles and some others play full screen), but some only fill up about 1/4 of the screen--centered.  I've tried fiddling with the various controls in the .ini, but can't get them to display full screen (the cocktail version of tetris was the one I worked on quite a bit).  I've got a WG U3100.  I'm running on an old Compaq Deskpro PIIII, 1Gz.  It's only got the built in Intel video--I'm not that familiar with PCs. I bought an ATI Rage card, but it won't plug into my computer --  not even sure if that's the video driver's the problem.

Any assistanace would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what "regular" Mame you're running...but get to display properties...see if there is an auto stretching feature...enabled.
As for your video card, you said it does not plug into your computer...it may be a AGP card...looks a lot like a PCI, but is set further back on the mobo.
Hope that helps?

One example is Marble Madness.  I can run it fullscreen in Mame32, but running it through mame and Mamewah, it runs small.  I've tried to make sure the mame.ini in mame is set with the same settings, but just can't get it to work.  Is there any place in mame32, other than the settings window where I can make sure the settings are right to compare?

Look in mame32.ini and the ini files inside the ini folder.

I copied all the settings that work on Mame32 into the mame.ini and still the games don't display full screen.  Other than mame won't even launch if I use d3d on.

I think I has something to do with the fact that I'm running a cocktail machine with the desktop rotated  to vertical .  When I rotate Mamewah to the normal horizontal, then it will launch the games full screen.  When I go to vertical, then the games are small.  I may have to consider launching these horizontal games from a different setup. . .

How do others deal with a coctail and a horizontal control panel?

I agree, I play games in MameWah and it's really small.  But when I play the game in Mame32, it'll fill the screen more.  I think it's because of the Aspect Ratio setup in Mame32.  As it's set to 4:3 in Mame32 and it customizable, as I have mine setup to 23:21.

you could turn on HW Stretch.

Also, in your mame.ini check what Resoulution you have set. Probably "Auto" I changed mine to the resolution of my monitor (800x600) and it fixed that problem for me.

The strange thing is that I already have hardware stretch on and changing the resolution does nothing to how the games appear.  I'm thinking now of trying a different FE that would allow mame to run regularly and rotate from a standard horizontal start and hopefully the FE would be rotated on its own.  I like 3darcade, but I can't access all of the controls because my monitor won't go to a high enough resolution--SO I can't even set it up.  But that's another topic.  Maybe Ultrastyle?

can you post your mame.ini file so we can take a look and see if there's something you're missing? You shouldn't have a problem with Mamewah..that's what I use and the games all fit the screen....

what resolution are you using, and what type of monitor? pc or crt?

Any more ideas on this, I am having the same problems.

It has something to do with the command -d3deffect scan50, I can use this on most games with no problems, the games show up full screen and everything is fine, but I have a few games that when I run it with my default settings It has about a 1 to 1.5 inch border at the top and bottom.  When I remove the -d3deffect scan50, they run at full screen but no scanlines (I like the scanlines ;D).

Some of the games that give me a problem are centipede, millipede, q-bert...

Also, the other strange thing is that these games run fine in MAME32 with the same settings that I have on my command line.

I'm using DragonKing as my game launcher.

any help would be great.

Thanks.

In short. You can't run vertical games in full screen mode if you are using horizontal monitor.Advance Mame has a capability to make changes and convert to another video modes.

here is my mame.ini file running with mameWah and normal PC monitor

Have you tried running games from MameWah using Mame32 instead of regular Mame? Running Mame32 -rol pacman should do the same thing as Mame -rol pacman , but retain your Mame32 settings, as far as I can remember.

Well, I am pretty sure my problem has to do with Dragon King .99, I tried to set up Dragon King with MAME32 and it does the same thing, but if I run the games with MAME32 0.95, the games run at fullscreen.  I know Howard is working on a new update to Dragon King so I will just wait for that to come out and see if it will work with the newer front end.

Well, I finally got it to work, And I can still use Dragon King.

I had to turn cleanstretch to full and change my resolution to 1280x768x0, that allows it to fill the screen and come pretty close to the original (I think) :D

hope this helps anyone, it worked for the problem I was having.

Later,
