Hantarex MTC 9110 Cap Kit?
« on: January 13, 2005, 09:36:19 am »
Just got my MAME CAB up and running but...

The JAMMA cabinet I bought has a Hantarex MTC 9110 25" monitor built in. This works OK, except it has a fair amount of discolouration in the bottom right hand corner. This changes colour dependent on what is being displayed. The corner also flickers - there is no flicker elsewhere.

I know cap kits can fix all manor of issues, but I wanted to know whether people thought this was the best course of action for this symptom?

It is a lot of work to do, if it is no better after !!

Could someone who has had experience of cap kits say what their experience of them is? Do they make a massive difference? Should I do it?

For those who are interested :-
I bought a Silverline 26 JAMMA cabinet.
Disconnected the PSU and Coin mech (12v)
Wired the Monitor chassis to the transformer earth - wired a mains lead and plug to the transformer. (I have a multi 4 way adapter inside the cab)
Sorted out the other GNDs - Earths.
Added a Desktop Pentium III 450 Mhz - 256 Meg RAM - 7 Gig HDD. Which has onboard Matrox G200 graphics (this works with 15khz arcade monitors  :)  ).
Added a soundblaster pro ISA sound card - made the sound a doddle to setup.
Added a J-Pac - from Ultimarc (they are nice helpful people)

All it needs now is the artwork, a clean and a circuit to interface the 12v coin mech to the J-Pac  (should be easy - looks like the J-Pac used active low signals to Coin 1 and Coin 2 - just like the other buttons).

Have the same problem with my MTC 9110 but on the bottom left corner. It looks like a purple spot and came out instead of red color...what this could be ?

Purple or green spots are a clear indication of magnetic interfernce. Your shadow mask in the tube may be magnetized (by an unshielded speaker to close to it now or for a long time in the past), or the edge of the frame or band or corner mounting ears may be magnetized as well, or your control panel or some other part next to that corner.

A permanent magnet facing N towards the monitor will color it one way, S will color it the other... It's always Purple or Green.

As for Red, that might be caused by magnetism, but more than likely the tube has been dropped at some point and the shadowmask got warped and is now not allowing the electrons to hit the right phosphor dot correctly.   You can try to degauss it and see if it works, but the chances are it's ruined.  I received a 32" TV set that was handled rough in shipping with this exact problem. No fixing it no matter how much I degaussed it.

Also, as far as flicker.... how close is the power supply/fan part of your PC to your monitor?   It could be the supply or specifically the fan in it is causing a magnetic field to be generated and fluctuating causing the image distortion as well.  Move the computer out of the cabinet and see what happens.

Also try twisting the cabinet 90 or 180 degrees. Sometimes the earth magnetic field is strong enough to affect the image on the monitor differently in different positions.

In any case both of you should try to deaguss the monitor. If you don't have a degaussing coil, you can build one out of parts from a dead TV or computer monitor plus a light bulb socket and light bulb. (Check OscarControls.com for info). Of you can use one of those gun-shaped 150 watt soldering irons ($5.99 at Harbor Freight) that works *pretty well* but not as good as a huge 14" degaussing coil.

I always cap a monitor if I don't know when it last had one done, even if it doesn't show any immediate i;; effects. It's a very cheap fix and doesn't take very long to do.
