Project64 Help Please
« on: January 12, 2005, 06:26:24 pm »
Using the final build of Project64 (1.5) I was looking forward to putting a few of my old N64 favourites on my MAME cab.

Hi chris,

Make sure you installed PJ64's own service pack. You can get it at http://pj64.emulation64.com/support/. If you have this already then check pj64's folder for a games faq which covers all major problems with the most popular games. You might find a solution to your Zelda problem there.

If nothing else works, you might want to search the Internet for a PJ64 zelda save that will allow you to skip the spot you are stuck on. Another option is trying an alternate emulator like Nemu64 or 1964. For a list of N64 emulators you can go to Zophar.net at http://www.zophar.net/n64.html.

The sad truth is, after all these years, n64 emulation still sucks.

At least 65% of the games aren't emulated properly, and even if they are you have to jump through several hoops like special cfg files, special settings and even multiple emulators, depending upon which game you wish to play.

I love the n64 and it's games, but imho it's just not worth it to run the n64 on your pc.  Perhaps someday, when the developers get a clue, combine all of the emulators into one and make the emulator "automagically" jump through all the hoops for you will it be a viable idea.

That would indeed be a good day.  I think ill still get the games that do work fine on PJ64 and put them on though.  Mario 64 is a good laugh any time of the day.  And dont get me started on Mario Kart....

Oh you mean the premier 2d front end out there.  Umm no, some people may be unable or choose not to use it, but the best can't be defined as "sucking".

It's not even something to kid about.   8)

You mean like your Dragon King front end? ;)

dangerous ground.....  you cant compare em really, one works perfectly (when configged) and the other is haphazard at best...

Yes it's a real shame this - I've still got my 64 and its great to fire up now and again. I was hoping not to put it in my cab, as it does not get played that much - and there are better options (dreamcast....). The emulation was going really well, but nothing has been updated for ages.  A lot of interest has shifted to DC or GC emulation.

Project64 1.5 - with SP1 patch - is the best overall, but if you have the odd problem with some games try 1964... there are several others too, but there is not much that will do better on anything apart from those 2.

Do you need to butter your ears to squeeze through doors?

He is very modest isn't he?  ::) While DK has something to offer, it's buggy state make it far from being the best. Project64 isn't perfect either, but is a lot easier to work with. Actually you can quote his opinion about PJ64, replace the emulator name with "Dragon King" and it would state the same.

In my very humble opinion, MAMEWah is the "premier 2D frontend".  And from the amount of websites I see where people run it as their first choice, I would have to say the majority of Windows-using cab builders would agree.

Rice's video plug in for N64 emus recently released 6.0.0c speeds up some games that ran poorly on my machine before.  Available here.

Note that this was written for 1964 and will need some things fixed to work with Project64's.  Can't find where I found it, but there is a patch to get it to work.  I think you can also just copy the files from the 1964 root directory to the Project64 root directory and it should work.

Still such a pain to have to tweak settings for each game.   :(

Thanks.

I think im going to give 1964 a try as well.  Its been mentioned twice now in this thread alone.  As im using MAMEWAH i could just have the emulators seperate, with the roms best suited to each in different folders.

There are quite a few games on the N64 i think would be really well suited to running on an arcade cabinet.  Im willing to put some time into getting the best results possible.

Hey Chris,

I'd be interested in your results...as far as what runs best on each emu. I would like to add some N64 stuff too but don't have time to troubleshoot at the moment. Good Luck...
