720 problems
« on: January 12, 2005, 03:03:20 am »
I've read every post on this forum regarding 720 and I can't find the answer to my problem.  My 8-way spins the player, but in the wrong direction.  If I spin it clockwise, the player spins counter clockwise and vice versa.  I hear many people using mame:analog (which I can't download anywhere), but I'm not sure if that will solve my problem considering I'm already getting a reaction from the joystick...just the wrong one.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

The problem with 720 in regular mame is that the controller is mapped to a spinner. So... when you hold the joystick in a direction it spins instead of pointing that way.

Mame Analog+ has a fix for this. Actually, it will allow you do interface an original controller, an analog joystick, or a regular 8-way (which points the direction you push it)

note:  it still isn't playable.

I think the closest (other then getting a real controller) is going to be an analog controller.... Get a flight stick and change the the stick....  But all other solutions kinda suck.

The other solution is to use analog mame.  I believe it supports duel decoder disc input for 720 (ie both mouse axis).  The original controller had a calibration disc.  I don;t think it owuld be too hard to make a knob replacement for an Oscar Spinner (the one with 72 teeth).  Possibly make a new decoder disc for the spinner or notch two of the teeth deeper. Then have another set of mouse IR at due north detecting the calibration notches.

If Oscar could come up with a fast interchangable knob system for his mice it would be very doable.  Just make a knob that looks like a joystick :)

I am not sure about the "knob that looks like a joystick". I have an original 720 controller and the joystick is mounted at approx. 45 degree's.  (plus the joystick is free to rotate in your hands). I would think that it would be hard to use a joystick hacked to a spinner.

Thanks

...720 ....  My 8-way spins the player, but in the wrong direction.

More info needed to fix.

First, which version number mame?
(Assuming you're using a post 0.85 mame) When you position the joystick to the left, which direction is the skater facing?  How about joystick down?  I bet all you need to do is reverse one or both axes.

BTW, almost all the posts here are out of date.  Currently mame has 720 mapped as an analog joystickNOT a spinner (anymore).  This change happened back in 0.85.

FWIW, this change makes it a lot easier for 99.9% of the people to play this game, at the cost of accurate documentation.  Now you can play the game with analog joysticks, and 8-way joysticks and keyboard to some degree.  I prefer the more accurate spinner method, but not many mainstream mamers are like us BYOAC's.
