Ummm, you might be able to guess from the topic what I'm going to ask, but the topic only lets you use so many characters... :)

I'm getting two Dreamcast controllers hacked up so I can attach them directly to my arcade control panel.  The controllers are being hacked to use the d-pad (not the analog stick, even though it's possible it's pointless if I understand it correctly).

So, I'm wondering if I could still play one of my favorite games: Gauntlet Legends.

I've tried playing it using just the d-pad on the Dreamcast (w/o arcade controls hooked up) and it controls a little strange, it seems like you might need to use the analog stick.  However, I -REALLY- want Gauntlet Legends on my arcade cabinet and I don't think there's any other way to do it...

well, unless youre going to use 49way joysticks youre not gonna get the feeling any different then using the D pad. which btw i think no one has hacked a 49way to a controller yet btw.

think about it, your joystick is only 8 way, so is your Dpad, its gonna be the same way. I own a real Dark Legacy machine and it has 8 way joysticks and works fine. it was a conversion and im guessing the person who did it didnt feel like buying 49ways like they were supposed to. the controls are fine IMO, you may have trouble aiming a super move in a very specific direction on occassion but most of the time the game helps auto aim anyway so it doesnt matter

49 ways will not be an easy hack.

Dreamcasts use halls effect joysticks.  These are very similar to pots (changes resistance) but it changes them in 4 directions instead of pots which only do it in 2 (center in a pot joystick is usually 1/2 the resistance possible where will be bax in a halls effect.

You CAN hack the halls effect joysticks into a normal joystick but it will be full up/down/left ect on the connection.

A 49 could be done with ever connection, removing a resistor from a curcuit.  But expect a little board for each direction...
