Author Topic: Need a Double Dragon CPO overlay. Can anyone help? (Read 8975 times)

Hey all. Just bought a Double Dragon cab. Very excited about fixin her up. Everything looks pretty good (need to touch up the side art a bit), but the control panel overlay could use replacing.
Anyone know where I can find a reprint or NOS overlay? (I have not been able to locate one yet).
Is there anyone out there that could make the control panel overlay for me, keeping it as close to the original as possible?

I'm sure it could be vectorised if we had some decent source material to go from, then you could get it printed at mamemarquees.com or somewhere.

You'd need to detach your CPO and scan it in sections, or take lots of closeup digital camera pics or something.

Were the colours really that yucky, or is that just 20 years of fading and they're supposed to be vibrant red and yellow and such?

I remember playing DD and that is NOT the way I remember the colors. I think its just typical color fade after so many years.

That is fading etc... That is why I want to replace it

I don't mind trying to vectorize it if needs be, but consider that it'll cost you about $40 or so to get a vinyl CPO printed, and the colours are likely to be off unless you can get them matched (since no way is anyone going to be able to work out exactly what colour red/blue etc should be used from a scan, especially one where the colours are faded anyway).

You would be as well trying to win that CPO on ebay first before you worry about restoring your existing one.

If you scan it, then I would leave the pics at actual size. The resolution needs to be high enough to make out all the detail.

You should scan it and share the scan anyway, regardless of color fade. Colors can easily be changed later if it's scanned and vectorized. That might not help you, but it might help someone else.

I was thinking about it, since I can't find one elsewhere. I asked the user a question a couple days ago and they have not responded. That and the low feedback makes me a little leary. $:-\$

Here some photo's of the DD CPO overlay (one from e-bay I'm gonna bid on). You can see the colors are a lot nicer, darker.

Just incase you care about keeping your cabinet original Taito never made a control panel overlay for Double Dragon. This is definitely a copy.

Seriously, they did not. I was the Operations Manager for Taito at the time. We did not make an overlay. The artwork was screened to the wood. The one that is pictured is a copy.

That is correct. Taito at the time had about 1,000 control panels for replacement. They were all purchased.

But that was the same artwork, correct? That's what I'm talking about. I know that sticker is a replacement one.

The point I am trying to get across is that the original manufacturer did not produce this overlay. Yes, the image is the same but someone copied the image and produced an ilegal control panel overlay. When you purchase this unit ask the people if they received a license from Taito to produce that overlay. I guarantee they will say NO. Once you put this overlay on it is not original anymore. I have worked in the coin-op industry over 20 years. I prefer to see original equipment and most collectors will only buy original equipment.

I have had two double dragon machines.

Both were conversions. Neither had a CPO that was double dragon. I have seen only one real double dragon dedicated, and it was pretty cool with the dual snakes.

If there are no more CPOs, then buy one that makes you happy.

The graphics you see above are for the Original Double Dragon. Taito did not do Double Dragon 2. If I remember correctly I think Romstar did it.

Technos developed them all... Taito was distributer/manufacturer of the first one.

Well, I guess the only way to replace the worn out, cig burned graphics on my Double Dragon is to use a copy like that one on ebay. At least it looks the same as the one that is on the cab now. I sure can't touch up the one that is on there, it is too shot.

So, are you saying that the DD graphics on my control panel now (the crusty faded one) is probably a copy too? and not original? It is definately attached to the wood with some type of adhesive. I'm curious about this.

He's saying that Taito never sold seperate "not yet applied" overlays. (Which is strange, cuz most manufacturers sold after-sale parts, but he says Taito did not.)

This is like the Mr. Do dedicated... rare, and most people don't know what they look like.

Ended up getting my arcade CPO for Double Dragon. The replacement is printed on vinyl and looks great in place of the old crusty one. Everything lined up nicely and looks great. Ordered it from here:
