NeoGeo lowboy cab
« on: January 06, 2005, 09:25:21 pm »
This is my third project, first being my stand alone CP and the second being Arcade360.
I wanted a cab that I could play original NeoGeo carts and JAMMA PCB's on and also one that didn't take up a lot of room. This lowboy was the perfect answer.
I got it very cheaply on an online auction. When I got it didn't work at all and when the monitor board was inspected it had had a major burn out. I sent it off to a pro as it was too much for me and he replaced the burnt out parts, replaced the caps to be on the safe side and it was all set. It has a 26" screen with some slight burn in which is only noticeable on a white screen. I rewired it as it was only wired for 3 buttons and built a new NeoGeo CP using pre laminated MDF, Happ comps and Happ buttons.
I have had it in my garage for a couple of months just finishing it off  ( painting coin doors, cleaning it up etc ) and today I took it down to the indoor climbing gym that my wife and I run and put it in there to earn a bit of cash. It's currently running Metal Slug 1.
I guess that makes me an operator now, lol. All I have to do is wait for the millions to roll in , he he.
Easy life here I come.

Just another angle. I know it's not a ground up project but any feedback is welcome.

That's pretty cool.  There's a couple of Candy Cabs on eBay right now running around $500 each.  I like how the base is cut.

Thanks bud, much appreciated. It's sooooo hard to get decent cabs in NZ. I'd give my eye teeth ( whatever they are ) to get hold of a decent dedicated cab but what ya gonna do.

Apollo, i think its real slick, well done. A question: have you pondered the idea of what it would look like with some chrome tmolding on that badboy? I think it would add a subtle touch of class my friend.  ;)

Looks pretty darn sweet!

I'm in NZ too and have one of those yiffans cabinets which has been sitting in the basement unloved for at least a year, your project has inspired me to tidy it up and get it going - I had no idea they could look so cool with a bit of work!

I see that you are also selling the old controls on trademe - the original buttons it comes with are awful aren't they? Sloppy and rubbery, like pressing a blob of jelly. As I said, looks pretty sweet with the new hardware in there.

Looks like the monitor board problem is a common one with those machines, I have two tubes and two monitors to fit the cabinet and both of the monitor boards are burned out. Would you mind giving me the contact details of the guy you got to do your monitor board repair?

Also, you don't know of anyone selling CPS2 hardware in NZ do you? Most of the stuff on trademe is either rubbish or hopelessly over priced.

Maybe we should set up an NZ arcade machine mailing list or something? There is an NZ pinball mailing list that is quite cool, anything that doesn't sell on the mailing list ends up on trademe but I always feel better about helping out a fellow enthusiast.

Cheers all. Crome T-molding would look pretty darn cool, I'll have to investigate. Thanks NIVO  ;)
mattv, yeah the buttons are not so good but it's only the way they are set up. All those old buttons were originall leaf switch buttons but have been converted to accept lever actuated microswitches, this basically turns them from a half decent button to a piece of dog turd.
It certainly is a problem finding carts, I have bought all mine of TradeMe at reasonable prices but I only have 5 games so far. Metal Slug 1, Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury, Ninja Commando and King of Monsters, average price was about $50.
The guy I use to fix my cabs is Peter Mahoney, his number is 078562105 and he's a bloody genius.
Thanks for the comments

I think Stuzza has poved that chrome t-molding looks good with his cab here.  I would seriously consider it.

OK so the cab is sold, $700, not bad. The guy who bought it can't pick it up till next week so I'm going to try to find time to get down to the gym and do some decent measurements. I 'll let everyone know asap.

If you don't get time to measure it up, tell the guy who bought it about this site.

We'll get a new member, as well as cabinet measurements.

Thanks for reminding me, I'll go down and measure up some time this week. What's the best place to put them? Maybe ask Jakobud?
